SEASIDE, Calif. – While Academy of Art women's soccer set its season-high in shots on goal by putting both of their attempts on net, ART U could not keep up with Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday as a trio of first half goals powered CSUMB to a 4-0 victory.
Helping the Otters (2-1-1) take the lead early in the match was Jasmine Safarians, scoring in the eighth minute off of an assist from Amelia McManus. Only minutes later in the 10th the Urban Knights (0-4-0) had a chance to draw level as redshirt sophomore forward
Hannah Moore put one on goal, but CSUMB goalkeeper Maleni Morales made a save at the bottom left portion of the net.Â
Insurance goals would come for the Otters later in the half, with the first coming in the 29th minute as Safarians struck for her second goal of the match and season after a helper from Nayeli Gallo. Later in the 33rd minute, Jazmine Castenade joined the stat sheet under the goal column to turn the Cal State Monterey Bay lead to 3-0, with the assist going to Cory Greer. Once more the Knights had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the 42nd minute, but the chance from shot from sophomore defender
Anna Maggi-Brown was denied the back of the net by Morales.Â
Though CSUMB did add a fourth goal to their lead in the 63rd minute from Andria Hernandez, ART U freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon produced six saves in just the second half alone. She totaled eight saves in all by the end of the match, one short of tying her season-high, and has made at least five saves in all four Academy of Art matches in 2022.Â
The Urban Knights can look forward to a week of rest before returning to the pitch, as they will host SF State on Sunday, Sept. 11 beginning at noon.Â
