2023 Saint Mary's Invitational Results
MORAGA, Calif. – Competing for the final time this fall season, Academy of Art women's tennis challenged multiple NCAA Division I and II opponents across three days of the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
Friday saw singles action for six Urban Knights across three draws while those same competitors paired off for three doubles matchups. Each winning at least three games, the tandem of freshman
Georgiana Parr and junior
Maria Vittoria Casucci dropped a 7-5 decision to UC Davis' Carly Schwartzberg and Michelle Zell while sophomore
Paulina Alvarez and senior
Viktoria Leth were topped 6-3 by Zuzanna Dziewiecka and Emma Yu of Stanislaus State both in the Red draw. The Blue segment featured a faceoff between freshman
Amelija Supulniece and junior
Erica Hellbe and Cal's Zuzanna Dziewiecka and Emma Yu which the latter won 6-4.
In Saturday's consolation of the Red doubles draw, Parr and Casucci defeated Stanislaus State's Abigail Mulick and Jaedyn Hendryx 6-2 in the quarterfinals, but could not get past a duo from Santa Clara in the semifinals. Individually, Parr also had success in the White West draw, topping the Warriors' Nicollet Alexander 6-3, 6-1 in the semis before taking down Leyanne Hirota of Pacific 6-3, 6-3 in the finals on Sunday.
The Blue singles draw saw Supulniece battle through two three-set matches, first defeating Santa Clara's Finley Kalinic 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 then drop a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 decision to Mika Ikemori of San Francisco in the quarterfinals. That same round of the Red singles draw had Leth fall to USF's Julia Visaya 6-3, 6-1 while a slight edge in the first set put SCU's Varvara-Maryia Zlotnik past Alvarez 7-5, 6-2. One of the closest matchups of the weekend nearly saw Hellbe best Natalie Lynch of Cal Poly, but momentum from a second-set tiebreaker ended up giving Lynch the 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-4 victory.
Singles highlighted the final day of action as three Urban Knights posted victories in addition to Parr. Hellbe bettered Stanislaus State's Hendryx 6-2, 6-2 and Leth topped Santa Clara's Olivia Wiese 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) while Supulniece picked up her second win of the weekend by bettering Alyssa State of Stanislaus State 6-1, 6-3.
