Tennis Scores Commanding Win Over Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – Taking the court for the first time in 11 days since the season opener, Academy of Art women's tennis dominated the afternoon as they quickly won the doubles point before taking five of six singles matches to pull out their first victory of the year with a 6-1 win over Holy Names on Friday.

The Urban Knights (1-1) started the day by claiming the doubles points from the Hawks (1-5), and they did so in relatively quick fashion. Finishing first was the duo of junior Yun "Nicole" Shiau and sophomore Julia Ortega, as they posted a 6-2 win on court two over the HNU team of Ella Lavender and Linda Dimitroff. Shortly after that it was the ART U tandem of freshman Jessica Plazas and sophomore Erika Hellbe clinching the point by capturing a 6-3 win on court one over Ana Rios and Deepalakshmi Varnaraja, with the final doubles matchup left unfinished on court three.

Moving on to singles action Academy of Art captured five of the six matchups, with four of those five decided in straight sets. Showing her worthiness of playing on court one, Plazas made quick work of her opponent as she was the first to finish by ousting Dimitroff in identical sets without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0. The second straight set victory came from junior Viktoria Leth on court four, as she notched the third ART U point of the day by taking down Lavender 6-2, 6-4.

Holy Names collected its only point of the afternoon with a singles victory on court four, but it only delayed the outcome as Hellbe collected the match-clinching point by taking down Rios on court five 7-6(7-3), 6-0. Finishing out the matches, Shiau was one of four Urban Knights to go 2-0 on the day by ousting Carlotta Romito with her own 6-2, 6-0 straight set win. The final of those four Knights to go 2-0 was Ortega, ending the day on a high note with a win in a tie-breaking third set on court two, over Varnaraja, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.

After the long layoff from the last matchup, Academy of Art faces a quick turnaround before its next as the Urban Knights battle the Dominican Penguins tomorrow at 11 a.m. from San Rafael, Calif.
