Two Knights Finish Among Top 10 At San Marcos Shootout

2023 San Marcos Shootout (Final Results)

TEMECULA, Calif. –
The final round of the 2023 San Marcos Invitational saw two Urban Knights jump into the top 10 on the leaderboard in freshman Nicole Yang and senior Jae Eun Park, helping Academy of Art women's golf to finish in ninth place as a unit with a combined score of 64-over-par 640.

Posting the best ART U finish in the tournament was Park, who was playing as an individual thus not counting towards ART U's team score, ending the action in a tie for seventh place at 9-over-par 153 for her first top-10 finish of the campaign. Her final round was tied for the lowest on the day as she carded a 3-over-par 75 with a round that featured three birdies, two of which came on the back nine where she was just 1-over on the 10th and 14th holes. Recording the best finish that counted towards the team score was Yang, as the freshman picked up her second top-10 result of the spring (third in 2022-23) as she tied for 10th at 10-over-par 154. Yang was just one stroke off of Park in her final round, shooting a 4-over-par 76 by going 2-over on each the front and back nine.

Just outside the top 20 was the duo of juniors Napat "Plern" Rattanaprakarn and Valeria Ruiz, with Rattanaprakarn tying for 25th at 15-over-par 159 thanks to matching the lowest ART U round of 3-over-par 75 thanks to a birdie on the 14th which helped her go just 1-over on the back nine. Meanwhile, Ruiz tied for 29th at 16-over-par 160 after her rocky back nine led her to turn in a 10-over-par 82 in the final round. Rounding out the scoring for ART U was freshman Maddie Elias, who tied for 50th at 24-over-par 168.

Capturing the victory in the team portion of the tournament was Simon Fraser, with the Red Leafs finishing at 34-over-par 610 to hold onto a slim two-stroke lead over the top finishing Pacific West Conference team Point Loma (36-over-par 612). While the Sea Lions took second as a team, they had an individual capture first place as Alli Kim finished at 2-over-par 146 to hold on for a one-shot lead over Breann Horn of host school Cal State San Marcos (3-over-par 147).

Just one tournament remains for Academy of Art women's golf before the PacWest Championship, which takes place next week starting on Monday, April 3 when the Urban Knights participate in the WT Desert Invite from The Lodge at Ventana Canyon in Tucson, Ariz.
