Early Score Not Enough For Men’s Soccer In Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. – En route to Academy of Art men's soccer recording a season-high 14 shots, the first goal in the ART U career for redshirt senior forward Jossart Jodito helped the Urban Knights hold a one-score lead for over 50 minutes, but Stanislaus State managed to find the back of the net three times in the second half to prevail 3-1 under the lights at Warrior Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Following four offside calls by Stan State (3-3-0) in the first seven minutes, the next six minutes were highlighted by multiple chances on frame from junior defender Abraham Valencia for ART U (0-4-3). Though those tries were stopped by the Warriors goalkeeper, Valencia would soon play a part in the match's first goal in the 17th minute when he swiftly worked a give-and-go play with junior forward Alejandro Palos, freeing Valencia to send a low cross from the edge of the box past a diving Stan State goalkeeper to the foot of Jodito who tapped it in from next to the far post.

When freshman defender Brody Duff wasn't attempting another shot on frame in the 30th minute, he was keeping the ART U defense strong as the Knights limited the Warriors to four shots in the half including one that featured an incredible diving save by sophomore goalkeeper Jaiden Brooks in the final seconds.

Brooks, who finished with a season-high seven saves in the contest, continued to be tested in the second half, handling multiple shots by Edgar Castaneda, the second of which led to a quick counter attack leading to redshirt sophomore midfielder Elvis Mensah's own chance on goal. In the 69th minute, a foul in the box enabled Tyler Tipton to send a penalty kick into the back of the net, knotting the match at 1-1. Though Brooks saved another look for Tipton thereafter, Finn Hoffmann connected on the Warriors' second score with a shot to the right post in the 74th minute.

Two minutes later, Mensah had a prime chance at the equalizer with a powerful shot in the box following a free kick, but the save was made. The match's final score of 3-1, which included Tipton's second goal of the evening in the 82nd minute, ended up not reflecting the close battle waged between the two teams over the 80 minutes prior.

The final non-conference match for the Urban Knights comes up this Friday, Sept. 22 at Jessup in Rocklin beginning at 4 p.m.
