ART U Keep Sunbirds Empty To Start, But FPU Finds Win

SAN FRANCISCO – Keeping the Sunbirds off the scoreboard throughout the first half was Academy of Art women's soccer, but late Fresno Pacific offense would push them ahead of the Urban Knights as the match ended with a 3-0 final.

With six shots in the opening frame for FPU, the ART U defense did well to turn the danger around while graduate student goalkeeper Nicole Peoples collected four saves in the match. With seconds left in the half, sophomore forward Jade Alverio had one of her own towards the Sunbirds' net, but Monique Nevarez was there to defer the threat. After strong defense from both sides, the match entered halftime scoreless.

With good-looking offense from the two sides in the opening minutes of the second half, FPU scored their first goal in the 52nd minute from a Mackenzie Madron strike just after freshman midfielder Zeena Grewal's first look at goal. It took another 23 minutes and shots from ART U's senior defender Haley Vaughan, junior forward Danielle Medellin, and Grewal for FPU to create more offense for their team, as Karyme Hernandez put the Sunbirds up another score as Karyssa Lopez added one of her own in the 80th minute. Alverio would get an additional shot off in the final minutes, but could not convert for the score.

With Lincoln forfeiting its match hosting ART U this upcoming Tuesday, the Knights will now prepare for Menlo as they'll take them on at home on Saturday, Oct. 26, starting at 1:30 p.m.
