Women's Tennis Takes Down CMU 4-0 At PacWest Tournament

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 48 Academy of Art women's tennis saw victory today with their 10th-straight opening-match victory at the Pacific West Conference Tournament, as they took down #12 seed Colorado Mesa in a clean 4-0 sweep to advance to the Quarterfinal.

Sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean started it off hot for the Urban Knights on Court 2 in doubles play with their 6-0 win against Julianna Campos Devyn Rodriguez. A close match on Court 3 would inevitably be what put ART U over the edge to earn the doubles point, with senior Viktoria Leth and junior Paulina Alvarez defeating Delia Maier and Kristen Tomas 7-6 (11-9). Also in a back-and-forth matchup on Court 1, No. 23 in doubles freshman Amelija Supulniece and junior Erica Hellbe allowed insurance for the Knights as the pair were leading 6-5 against Issy Coman and Makenna Livingston when the match was called as unfinished.

No. 55 Supulniece made quick work on Court 1 in singles to earn the Knights' second point of the day, as she took down Coman 6-1, 6-0 to give ART U a 2-0 lead. Leth contributed towards the team score next with her 6-3, 6-0 win against Thomas on Court 5, and Plazas rounded it out for the squad on Court 2 with her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Livingston to finalize the sweep as the match ended with a 4-0 final score. Junior Maria Vittoria Casucci, Najean, and Alvarez all came out of the first day of action with unfinished matches.

In the Quarterfinal match tomorrow, Academy of Art, the #5 seed, will match up against No. 36 Hawaii Pacific, the #4 seed, with a 1 p.m. start time at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
