Gonzalez Scores First Collegiate Goal In Jessup Clash

SAN FRANCISCO – Returning to SF Glens at Treasure Island Field for the fourth match of their 2024 campaign, Academy of Art women's soccer found new success, but ultimately dropped the non-conference contest with a 2-1 on Wednesday.

The Warriors, now 2-4 overall, saw a competitive battle with ART U from beginning to end, as the pair traded shots throughout the entire duration of the match. The Urban Knights recorded their season-high in total shots (11), as the squad started with six in the first half, including junior forward Danielle Medellin striking two.

Jessup's sixth shot of the first half in the 39th minute found the net to give the Warriors the lead going into halftime, as Hannah Olariu scored an Olimpico, bending her corner into the goal past the goalkeeper and into the bottom right corner.

Just eight minutes into the following frame, the first shot by either squad in the half tied up the match, with freshman defender Mia Gonzalez scoring a header into the top left corner off a Medellin free kick curved in from the left side of the box. The score was Gonzalez' first career collegiate goal as well as the Knights' first at their new home field.

Seven more shots came from the Warriors in the second half, with the final putting Jessup up 2-1 in the 83rd minute after Kaylee Gillespie got one to knock in on a roller off the right post. Sophomore forward Jade Alverio got a shot off on target in the 88th minute, but Celeste Fernandez collected the save to secure the win.

Academy of Art moves to a 0-4-1 overall and will next head to Hawaii, kicking off the trip against UH Hilo on Oct. 1 with a 3 p.m. HT (6 p.m. PST) start.
