ART U Ends Preseason With Clash At San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – In the last preseason exhibition before Academy of Art women's tennis begins to battle with Pacific West Conference schools, the Urban Knights traveled down to the South Bay to take on their final NCAA Division I opponent of the year, where they saw San Jose State come out on top with a 7-0 final.

In the top doubles position, sophomore Amelija Supulniece and junior Jessica Plazas fell to Cheuk Ying Shek and Carla Urchoeguia 6-1 result as the Spartans headed into singles play up 1-0.

With SJSU eventually taking all five of the matches played in singles, six out of 10 of those sets saw a Knight within three games, as ART U created those six 6-3 or better results against their DI opponents. Freshman Stefani Georgieva put in a competitive fight against Olaya Bances who took it 6-3, 6-4, while Plazas held a similar final score against Duru Durgan who triumphed 6-3, 6-3. Right behind was senior Paulina Alvarez's 6-2, 6-3 result against Urchoeguia while Supulniece (6-1, 6-3 against Ying Shek) and sophomore Georgiana Parr (6-1, 6-1 against Soledad Fayos) followed thereafter.

Headed home to kick off the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m., ART U will host Menlo in Livermore to begin the 2024-25 spring campaign.
