THE PENULTIMATE PAIR
Academy of Art men's basketball have just four games to go until the Pacific West Conference regular season comes to an end, and they'll start that last quartet of contests off against Hawaii Pacific and UH Hilo starting this Thursday.
TIP-OFF
This Thursday's faceoff with the Sharks will commence at 3:30 p.m. for ALS Awareness Night and Monday's tip time with the Vulcans is set for 7:30 p.m for Senior Night honoring senior guards Treylon Payne and Rodney Munson along with forwards Isaiah Williams and Quintin Metcalf. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights via the athletics app (Apple App Store,
Google Play Store) and on
Twitter &
Instagram, as well as "Like" the
Urban Knights on Facebook for score updates, videos, and recaps.
On Feb. 24, ART U men's basketball will offer their Athletes Backing Athletes game, with student-athletes from other on-campus teams coming out to support their fellow Urban Knights. A Fan Bus will depart 620 Sutter at 4:20 p.m. on Saturday.
KNIGHT WATCH
Back in the win column after picking up a victory against Dominican on Feb. 17, the Urban Knights took down the Penguins 69-64 after creating an early lead in the opening minutes. All members of ART U created a contribution while six of them scored eight points or more en route to the triumph.
Williams (14.0), Munson (13.0), Metcalf (11.0), and redshirt junior Donovan Vickers (11.0) all average double-digit points for ART U this season, while junior forward Robbie Armbrester is next up with his 9.4 points per game after his most recent strong performances. The trio of Williams, Metcalf, and Armbrester have all shown off their defensive presence most recently, as at least one of the three have secured at least four steals individually in ART U's last four games.Â
As a group, the Knights average the most blocks per game in the PacWest as well with an average of 4.38, while Williams ranks within the NCAA Division II top 50 in steals per game (2.0).
SEE YA, SHARKS
Winners of three of their last five showings, the Sharks, who will be battling to sneak into a playoff spot in their final four games, are looking to bounce back against ART U on Thursday as they've dropped their two most recent contests against Jessup and Fresno Pacific. Melo Sanchez, HPU's leader in points per game (14.6) will look to lead his squad once again while he looks for help from three other Sharks who all average 11.0 ppg or more themselves. Matthew Van Komen will be the one down low battling for rebounds against the Knights' bigs as he brings in a respectable 7.4 boards per game. ART U will be looking for their eighth-straight win against HPU as the Sharks' last victory came from early 2020.
VALIANT VULCANS
Preparing to compete in three Northern California contests in a six day span, UH Hilo will compete against both Dominican and Jessup before making the trip out to the city. Allowing the fewest points out of all PacWest schools this season, ART U's fifth-best offense will need to come into play to battle against UHH's average of 67.8 points per game that's given up. Julio Montes II leads the Vulcans in scoring as he collects 13.5 points per game, while his teammate Jake Kosakowski adds on an additional 11.8 on average. Nadjrick Peat will look to keep his rebounding average up, as his 8.3 per game ranks second-most within the PacWest. Once again on a hot streak against a Hawaii School, ART U seeks their seventh-straight win against the Vulcans and their third-straight regular season sweep.
ART U HOLDS OFF DOMINICAN TO SECURE 69-64 WIN ON THE ROAD
Jumping ahead early in their Monday night battle against Dominican on Feb. 20, Academy of Art men's basketball used their early momentum to separate themselves from the Penguins to surge towards a Pacific West Conference win with a 69-64 final score.
LOOKING AHEAD
Closing out the regular season on the road, ART U will head down to Southern California to square up against Concordia on Thursday, Feb. 27 and play against Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Mar. 1 in preparation for the PacWest Conference Tournament.
