ART U Offense Erupts For Nine Runs In Finale With SFU

BRISBANE, Calif. – A season-best 11 hits including a three-run double from junior infielder Audrey Allen ultimately produced nine runs for Academy of Art softball in its second game of a Wednesday doubleheader with Simon Fraser, but consistent offense by the Red Leafs proved to be too much as the visitors followed up their 5-0 win in the first contest with a 15-9 victory in the day's conclusion.

GAME 1 – SFU 5, ART U 0
After rain and wet field conditions caused a 25-minute delay to the start of the twin bill, sophomore pitcher Kayla Vaughan (0-7) limited Simon Fraser to just two hits over three scoreless innings out of the gate. The Urban Knights had an opportunity to grab a lead in the second frame when graduate student outfielder Cailee Grayhorse-Pupecki and freshman infielder Riannah Maulupe were in scoring position, but SFU managed to strike first on a solo homer in the fourth.

Grayhorse-Pupecki nearly scored the tying run in the fourth after stealing her second base of the day and forcing a throwing error yet the inning that followed further separated the Red Leafs as four runs came home and the 5-0 score thereafter would hold up through the seventh.

Alexis FolksGAME 2 – SFU 15, ART U 9
Facing a 2-0 deficit after the first inning, Academy of Art worked three walks in the bottom of the first with the last from Maulupe bringing in a run. ART U then countered SFU's two-run second with six in the home half, three on singles by freshman outfielder Danielle Shinko, Maulupe, and senior utility Alexis Folks plus three on a bases-loaded double off the bat of Allen.

The Knights' 7-4 advantage would not last, however, as the Red Leafs responded with three in the third to tie things up at 7-7. Pairs of scores in each of the subsequent two innings built the visitors' lead to 11-7 before a four-run sixth furthered the margin. With singles from Shinko and Allen coming ahead of her, Folks grinded through an at-bat to get the pitch she wanted, extending the game on a two-run single in the home portion of the sixth inning. The ART U comeback remained there the rest of the way, ending at 15-9 in favor of SFU.

Academy of Art shifts to 1-12 overall with the day's results, getting three runs batted in apiece from Allen (2-for-2) and Folks (2-for-4) in the second game. Newcomers thrived on Wednesday as sophomore outfielder Ari Mallari went 3-for-7 with two runs scored on the day, Shinko ended 2-for-3 with a run batted in and two runs scored in the finale, and Maulupe wrapped up 2-for-6 with two driven in and one run scored.

Simon Fraser improves to 8-7 after Monica Bourque (4-2) tossed a four-hit complete game shutout and Kristen Davyduke added a homer with two runs batted in during the opening contest then Makena Simmons went 3-for-4 with three driven in while Jordyn Ruppel (2-1) claimed the game two victory.

Now with over a week before the start of Pacific West Conference play, ART U will prepare to face Dominican in a road-home series that begins in San Rafael on Feb. 28.
