ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – In Wednesday's doubleheader that was relocated to Marv Mayes Softball Field on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College, Academy of Art softball put three runs on the board over each contest, but Sonoma State walked away winners by final scores of 6-3 and 9-3.
GAME 1 – SSU 6, ART U 3
Though junior pitcher
Kamielle Powell (0-2) struck out the side in the first inning, the Seawolves struck twice and built a 5-0 advantage two frames in.
In the seventh inning, a leadoff walk by senior utility
Alexis Folks, a single from junior infielder
Audrey Allen, and another walk drawn by senior catcher/infielder
Liberty Herrera set the table for run-scoring plays initiated by freshman outfielder
Danielle Shinko, sophomore pitcher/utility
Kayla Vaughan, and sophomore outfielder
Ari Mallari. The comeback would end there, however, as Sonoma State held on to win 6-3.
GAME 2 – SSU 9, ART U 3
Academy of Art struck first in the second contest as another leadoff walk by Folks eventually saw her cross home plate on a groundout by Allen just four batters in. SSU countered with a three-run rally in the second inning, but just one run separated the teams after multiple stolen bases by Shinko and Vaughan produced another score for the Knights in the top of the fourth inning.
The Seawolves would push away in the bottom half of the frame, plating six before ART U took one back in the sixth on Folks' walk, her third of the game, with the bases loaded. In the end it was a 9-3 victory for the home team.
Through its first two series of the year, ART U's record sits at 0-4 overall. Allen ended the day 2-for-6 with one run scored and one run batted in while Vaughan also plated one of her teammates before going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the day's finale. Powell posted a career-high six strikeouts in game one, adding three more in 3.0 scoreless relief frames in the second contest.
Improving to 5-2, Sonoma State was led by Lauren Mirtoni's 2-for-3 game one effort which included two runs batted in while Sophia Newcomb drove in four as part of a 2-for-4 game two. Defensively, Charlie Johnson (2-2) and Ava Paquin (2-0) picked up wins, combining for three earned runs allowed in 11.1 innings of work.
