Chaminade Shifts Momentum Midway To Win Series Finale

BRISBANE, Calif. – Academy of Art softball and Chaminade were scoreless through the first two innings of Tuesday's Pacific West Conference series rubber game at Mission Blue Field, but in the end, the visitors were sound defensively and got the runs they needed for a 3-0 win during rallies in the third and fourth innings.

After both sides were retired in order in the first frame, junior pitcher Kamielle Powell (2-15) exited a threat with two on in the second to keep the Silverswords off the scoreboard. Patience at the plate helped CUH plate its first run on a bases-loaded walk in the third before two more were added in the fourth on two singles and a double then a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 score.

Freshman infielder Riannah Maulupe then roped a two-out double to left center as the Urban Knights attempted to counter in the bottom of the fourth, but Chaminade managed to dodge the run. Sophomore pitcher/utility Kayla Vaughan (2-11), who entered in relief the previous inning, worked around two base runners in the fifth and went on to retire six of the final eight batters she faced though the end result would be a 3-0 score favoring the Silverswords.

ART U shifts to 4-26 this season and 3-14 in PacWest matchups as Vaughan finished with 4.0 scoreless relief innings that saw just three hits and one walk allowed against three strikeouts. Maulupe's double as part of her 1-for-3 day was her second of the year and helped extend her reached base streak to 19 games.

The series win elevates CUH to 6-33 overall and 5-19 in conference after Mimi Smith provided one run batted in and one run scored in her 1-for-2 performance. Defensively, Bailey Benson (1-10) finished the complete game shutout with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

Now at the tail end of its 11-game homestand, Academy of Art will host Northwest Nazarene in the final non-conference doubleheader of the season beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Mar. 27.
