Eagles Rallies Turn Away Early Leads For Urban Knights

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Matched up with Biola at Freedom Field for the first of two Pacific West Conference doubleheaders in as many days, Academy of Art softball opened both contests with 2-0 leads, but the Eagles responded with their own scoring sequences each time to capture both wins, taking the first 17-2 in five innings and the second 8-5.

GAME 1 – BU 17, ART U 2 (5)
After a double from sophomore outfielder Ari Mallari began the day, freshman infielder Riannah Maulupe provided a run-scoring double and later touched home on a passed ball for the 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Walks and extra-base hits allowed Biola to move in front  11-2 over the next two frames toward what would eventually be a 17-2 final.

GAME 2 – BU 8, ART U 5
Like the series opener, Mallari led off the second contest with a double and was plated during back-to-back run-producing singles from graduate student outfielder Cailee Grayhorse-Pupecki and sophomore infielder Kayla Vaughan.

The Urban Knights' 2-0 margin held until the second when seven came in for BU. Facing an 8-2 deficit in the fifth, Academy of Art scored three times as four different players singled including senior catcher/infielder Liberty Herrera who registered a sacrifice fly. The scoreboard remained quiet the rest of the way, settling on the 8-5 tally favoring the Eagles.

ART U moves to 2-17 on the season and 1-5 in PacWest play despite four hits and two runs scored for junior infielder Audrey Allen on the day. Mallari doubled twice to give her three thus far in 2025 and Maulupe upped her current hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-6 combined performance.

Biola, now 11-9 overall and 5-1 in conference action, was led by a big day from Kendall Nakano as she totaled seven runs batted in as part of a 5-for-6 effort with a home run and four runs scored. DJ Symons (4-0) collected the win after 4.1 innings of scoreless softball in the opening contest before Kayla Bousquette (3-3) surrendered two runs through 3.0 innings for a game two victory.

Finishing up their PacWest series tomorrow, ART U returns to Freedom Field for a noon twin bill with the Eagles.
