AAU Women's Soccer Earns First Win

Box Score #1

Hawaii--The Academy of Art University's Women's Soccer team recently traveled to Hawaii, where they played a grueling schedule of four games versus top Division 2 Pac West teams in six days.  The Women's team faced the following universities while in Hawaii: Hawaii Pacific University, BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade University if Hawaii, and University of Hawaii-Hilo.  The lady Urban Knights, despite having had only a month to learn how to play together as a team, fought hard, played well and impressed the other coaches and fans in the beautiful state of Hawaii.  The ladies first faced Hawaii Pacific University and the match saw the Academy of Art University dominating the field.  The match was scoreless until at the last 34 seconds of regulation time, the referee made a highly-disputed call that led to a direct penalty kick for HPU.  HPU took advantage of this opportunity and the game ended at 1-0.

The Urban Knights next played a highly-talented and experienced BYU Hawaii team who many say should win the conference this year.  AAU again battled and held BYU to a scoreless tie at the end of the first half.  However, BYU came out strong and determined in the second half and tallied five goals against the Lady Urban Knights, who seemed to lose steam in the second half.  The Knights were granted a penalty kick after a physical BYU player took-out one of the Knights, but the shot missed and sailed high and with it went any hopes for a comeback. The team has been plagued by injuries in this inaugural season, but has also worked incredibly hard to cover any areas left vulnerable due to injuries.  Anika Perkins, a starter and the only Knight with prior NCAA Division 2 experience, recently suffered a minor ankle injury while playing Humboldt and was unable to play at all during the Hawaii trip, despite valliant efforts to recover and get back on the field.

Less than 24 hours after the BYU game, the lady Knights faced a scrappy and determined Chaminade University, fresh off their exciting win against Hawaii Pacific University.  The lady Knights started the game intense and focused and did not let up at all throughout the entire game.  At 31:56 , Olivia Dupon dribbled past several Chaminade defenders and took a beautiful shot that sailed right over the keeper's outstretched hand to make the game 1-0 in AAU's favor.  The Knights didn't let up and a pass from Jessica Zopfi found Sophomore standout Morgan LeFever who blasted it between the keeper's legs to bring the score to 2-0 to end the first half.  The Knights came out hard in the second half,  having 8 shots on goal to Chaminade's 4, the game ended 2-0 and the Academy of Art University's Women's Soccer team garnered its first win in the school's history.

The team then hopped on a plane and traveled to the island of Hilo where they played the last game of the trip against UH Hilo (3-3).  The Knights gathered together their last bits of energy to face the veteran Hilo team that recently beat AAU's Women's team in a scrimmage at Kezar Stadium.  The first half was a great battle and remained scoreless as both teams fought to possess the ball.  The lady Knights ended the first half dominating Hilo and clearly outshot the Vulcans in the last 15 minutes of the half.  Unfortunately, Hilo's team came out stronger than the Urban Knights in the second half and the match ended in a win for Hilo and a score of 4-0.  The Lady Knights held their heads high, though, as they closed out a very successful trip to Hawaii and returned back to San Francisco to report their first official win for the Academy of Art University's Women's Soccer Team.
