San Francisco, Ca--Academy of Art University's Women's Soccer Team survived a tough game yesterday against a strong Fresno Pacific squad for their first home game of 2008. The game went into two ten-minute overtime periods and ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Urban Knights scored early, in the 9th minute of the first half, with a beautiful cross by freshman
Olivia Dupon to freshman
Solveig Barnes, who recorded the Knights' first official goal in the history of the program. Fresno came back and countered with a long shot by defender Amanda Sherr in the 15th minute that sailed past the head of keeper
Shelby Magallon, whose vision was blurred by the blazing sun.
The Knights regrouped and scored again late in the first half when Freshman Taylor Wehring skillfully dribbled around several defenders and the keeper and hit a perfect left-footed shot into the open goal. The Knights lead was lost in the 67th minute when Fresno Pacific offender Ashley Sherr snuck a shot through Magallon to tie up the game at 2-2.
After two intense 10-minute overtime periods, the Knights outshot Fresno 17-12, but had to settle for a tie. "I am very proud of how the girls played today and know that today's game was definitely a step towards our first official win as a team," stated head coach Courteney Cosso. "The fact that the team had 17 shots today as compared to one shot against Humboldt is exceptional and shows that we are improving every day."
The Knights next game will be at 7pm this Saturday, September 6th, at Kezar Stadium, against Pac West Conference member, University of Hawaii-Hilo.
