San Francisco, Ca—In their last home game of the season , the Academy of Art University's women's soccer team lost a close match to Dominican University on Saturday afternoon. Both teams came ready to play as the game was scoreless through the first half. Each team had five shots during the first half. After an unfortunate turn of events in the second half, the Urban Knights actually scored on themselves, giving the Dominican Penguins the lead. The Penguin offense then scored a goal of their own in the 71
st minute of play, and the Urban Knights ended up losing with a final score of 2-0.
The young Urban Knights team slowed down offensively after the first half. Inexperience and lack of roster depth for the team played a part in the game. Twelve minutes into the second half, Theresa Sianez accidentally kicked the ball into the Urban Knights' own goal, as she was trying to keep the Penguin's defense from doing so themselves. That goal gave the Penguins a small lead which they were able to capitalize on. With the momentum their way, the Penguins scored off a goal by Katie Brown, assisted by Eleanna Mendez. That second goal was enough to keep the Urban Knights off balance and quiet for the remainder of the game.
As a team, the Academy of Art University had five shots in the first half, and two in the second for a total of seven shots in the game. They also had one team save on the day.
Freshman Carmela Doerr again stepped up offensively for the Urban Knights. Doerr had four shots, one which was on goal during the game. Sophomore Olivia Dupon and freshman Jasmine Sharpe both had one shot on goal on the day.
Defensively, Solveig Barnes had a solid game for the Academy of Art University. Barnes gave up two goals and had four saves in the match.
For the Penguins, Katie Brown had two shots on goal, and one goal and Mary Wheeler also had two shots on goal in the game. Bridget Folan had four shots, including one shot on goal and Mallory Englehardt had on two shots, with one shot on goal on the day. Goal keeper Alicia Paulsen had three saves and allowed no goals from the Academy of Art University. As a team, Dominican had 13 shots and 11 corner kicks during the game.
With the loss, the Academy of Art University's record falls to 1-6-2 in conference and 1-11-2 overall, while Dominican University's record improves to 3-3-2 in conference and 5-6-3 overall. The Urban Knights play again on Friday, October 23rd at UC Santa Cruz. Game time is set for 3:00pm at East Remote Soccer Field in Santa Cruz, Ca.
