San Francisco, CA: With only five games left in their 2009 season, the Urban Knights Women's soccer team will head to Hawaii for a three game road trip. The women will face only PacWest conference teams for the remainder of the year, after their single game match up against UC Santa Cruz this past week. The Urban Knights sit on one win this season, and are hoping to finish on a high note.
Facing UC Santa Cruz: The dominating Division III UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs hosted the Urban Knights Friday evening. With the game scoreless for over 70 minutes of play, the Banana Slugs took the lead when they scored off a penalty kick. The single goal would prove to be enough as the Urban Knights ended up losing with a score of 0-1.
Scouting BYU-Hawaii: The Seasiders sit in the number two position in the PacWest soccer rankings. With a 8-2 conference record, BYU-Hawaii will be the toughest competition for the Urban Knights this road-trip. In their first match up earlier this season, the Seasiders easily beat the Academy of Art University with a score of 5-0. On the season, BYU-Hawaii has a total of 31 goals, 208 shots, and 39 saves. They are lead by Emily Mearns who has an amazing 10 goals, and one assist, for a total of 21 points so far for the Seasiders. Merans was an All PacWest First Team choice in 2008 and 2006. The Seasider's top goal keeper Becky Ploeger has allowed only seven goals and has 31 saves in over 980 minutes of play. Before soccer season was even underway, BYU-Hawaii was predicted to finish as Pacific West Champions for the second consecutive year.
Scouting Chaminade University: The Silverswords are currently ranked 9th in the PacWest standings. They are winless in their 2009 season to date. Chaminade was defeated by the Urban Knights 3-0 in their game on October 12th. The Silverswords have a combined team total of three goals, 36 shots and an impressive 123 saves this year. They are led by Marissa Faye, Whitney Williams, and Haley Miller who each have one goal for a total of two points this season. Faye was also predicted to make the PacWest All American team in the pre-season voting.
Scouting University of Hawaii-Hilo: With a 2-4-3 conference record, the Hilo Vulcans are ranked in 7th place in the Pacwest standings, just one place higher than the Urban Knights. This season, the Vulcans have a team total of 12 goals, 107 shots, and 85 saves. Emily Lambert tops the Vulcans with two goals and three assists for a total of seven points this season. Gina Tumasone is right behind with three goals, for six total points and Alysia Salvador has two goals for four total points this year. Goal Keeper Shanna Brown has allowed 17 goals, and posted 82 saves in over 1276 minutes of play. Brown was named PacWest player of the week for the week of September 21st. This will be the first face-off between the Academy of Art University and the Urban Knights this season.
Looking Ahead: The Academy of Art University will be in Hawaii from October 26th to October 30th. They will play three games in just five days. Upon returning home from this road-trip the women will have only five days rest before they again hit the road, for a two game road trip to conclude their 2009 season.
