San Francisco, CA- The Academy of Art University's women's soccer team led off the season at home Thursday afternoon against CSU East Bay. After battling strong the first half, giving up only one goal, the Urban Knights quickly fell apart in the second half and ended up losing the game with a final score of 0-5.
The Urban Knights seemed eager to start their season and came out strong. Defense played a major role for the Academy of Art University in the first half, as the game remained scoreless through the first 30 minutes of play. The CSUEB Pioneers came out in full swing after in the start of the second half, scoring in the first minute. From there they took control of the game never looked back. The Pioneers outshot the Urban Knights 15 shots to three.
For the Academy of Art University, freshman Christina Powell had one shot in the game and sophomores Morgan LeFever and Solveig Barnes also had one shot each. Barnes started the game as the goal keeper and gave up five goals with four saves.
Lead scorers for the CSUEB Pioneers were Zuly Diaz who had four shots, one goal and two assists in the match and Shianna Falk had two shots, and one goal. Michelle Garcia and Danielle Barbounis each had one shot and one goal in the game. Goalkeeper Nina Cefalo had one save during the match.
With the loss, the Urban Knights' record falls to 0-1 and Cal State East Bay's record improves to 1-0. The Urban Knights take action again on Sunday, August 30th, against the University of San Francisco. Game time is set for 1:00pm at USF's Negoseco Stadium.
