Honolulu, HI – The Urban Knights took on the Lady Swords of Chaminade University and emerged victorious by a score of 77 to 67. Despite being down six at halftime the Urban Knights were able to come from behind to take the game, thanks to a 21 point performance by senior
Sondra Stilwell. The Urban Knights also had help from three other players who managed double figures in scoring. This marks the second straight game and third overall in which AAU has had four player finish with double figures in scoring. The win bumps the Urban Knights to 7-13 overall and 3-6 in conference, while the loss drops the Silversords to 1-13 overall and still winless in conference.
A Jessica Nolan lay-up opened the contest putting AAU up by two early. The Swords answered with a lay-up of their own on the very next play and gave the game it's first of four ties. The Urban Knights would go up by as many as six points within the first four minutes. Chaminade broke the final tie of the half at the eight minute mark going up 22-19 over the Knights. AAU would find themselves down by as many as nine points but would go into the locker down six, 38-32.
AAU opened the second half with a 10-2 run, which was sparked by five straight Nolan points. A Lorraine Etchell jumper and a three by Tianna Chaidez gave AAU their first lead since half way through the first. The Urban Knights continued to gradually widen the gap between the Lady Swords. After the fourth and final tie, 42-42, the Urban Knights outscored the Swords 11-5 to bring their lead over CUH to 47-58. AAU managed to keep the cushion around 10 points, and although the Swords were able to bring the score as close as eight points AAU took the game, 77-67. Stilwell scored 6 of her game high 21 in the final minutes of play.
Three of the Lady Swords were in double digits; Samantha Saito has 18 points, Brittany Bridges added 12 points and Kayci Will added 10 points of her own.
The shooting percentages were nearly identical; the Lady Swords shot 42% from the floor, while AAU shot 40%. However, the margin from beyond the arch proved to be the difference as the Urban Knights shot nearly 60% to CUH's 33%.
For the Urban Knights, Stilwell had a game high 21 points and was a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line. She also had 5 steals, 3 assists and 2 boards. Jessica Nolan notched her third straight double-double, finishing with 14 points and a season, and game, high 17 rebounds. In her first start of the season, Chaidez added 11 points, was 4-6 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc. Madeline Houston chipped in with 13 points and one assist. Verity Peets also grabbed 14 of the teams 42 rebounds.
The Urban Knights are back in action against PacWest Conference opponent Notre Dame de Namur on February 13th, 2010 at Kezar Pavilion. Tip off is set for 5:30 PM. The men are set to start immediately following the contest.
