Quinney and Vargas Awarded PacWest Weekly Honors

Phoenix, AZ -- In a week highlighted by a 23-7 victory over Bethany University, Academy of Art University baseball had two of its juniors, right-handed pitcher/infielder Darnell Quinney and infielder Chris Vargas, named Pacific West Conference Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll. Both Quinney and Vargas had timely hits all throughout the Urban Knights' 38-run week. The honors were announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Apr. 19, for games played Apr. 12 - Apr. 18.

was setting career-highs all week long beginning with his first three-hit day as an Urban Knight on Apr. 16 versus Patten University. AAU won the game 6-1 and it was thanks in large part to Quinney who also had the first triple of his career in that contest. One day later in the front end of a doubleheader with Bethany, Quinney blasted his first home run since last year.

In the 23-7 game two, the junior walked three times which he had done just once earlier this season and also pitched a gem. Against Grand Canyon on Apr. 10, Quinney (1-9) had set the new Academy of Art strikeout record, but he promptly broke that versus Bethany. The right-hander struck out nine Bruins, allowed just one earned run and two base hits for a microscopic .083 batting average against in the start.

By the end of the week, Quinney had gone 7-for-15 (.467) with five runs scored, three RBIs, four walks, and one stolen base. He effectively hit for the cycle over the four games with four singles, one double, one triple, and one home run. Quinney's slugging percentage for the week was .867 and his on-base percentage finished at .579. As a pitcher, Quinney not only earned his first victory on the mound, but he also fanned a career-high nine batters over 6.0 innings of work.

made quite the impact with his bat this past week. He began with a 2-for-3 day in AAU's final home game on Apr. 16 versus Patten. Vargas drove in two with a clutch bases-loaded single in the first inning that put the Knights up early.

In the doubleheader against Bethany, Vargas started the first game and went 1-for-3, then came in as a pinch-hitter in the second contest and scored one of the 23 Academy of Art runs after earning a walk. Vargas saved his best for last, however, because the junior went deep for the first time this season in the Patten rematch on Apr. 18. He finished that game 2-for-5 with the home run, four RBIs (tying his career-high set last year against Menlo), and one run scored.

Vargas completed the week with a 5-for-12 (.417) stat line, six RBIs, two runs scored, two walks, one steal, one double, and one home run. The junior posted a .750 slugging rate and a .500 on-base percentage.

This is the second selection to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for Vargas and the first for Quinney.
