Strong start to the season: The Urban Knights are already off to a strong start in the 2010 season. They won their first game against Bethany University with a score of 7-1. A week later the women battled it out with Menlo College taking the game into double overtime. They came away from that game with a 1-1 tie. ART U is playing well and really coming together as a team.

Leading the Knights: Freshman newcomer Hannah Emmett is really helping the Knights offensively. She currently leads the team with three goals and two assists for a total of eight goals. Emmett was also named PacWest Player of the Week on September 7th. Sophomore Carmela Doerr is second on the team with two goals for a total of four points. Junior Megan Bucci and sophomore Jasmine Sharpe each have one goal and two assists, and senior Emi Sullivan has one goal on the season.

Conference homestand: The Academy of Art University women will be put to the test this week when they begin conference play right here on their home turf. The women start with Dixie State on Thursday the 16, and follow with Grand Canyon on Saturday the 18th.

Scouting Dixie State:  The Red Storm currently have a 3-1 record and sit in first place in the PacWest. Last year they finished first in the conference with a 13-1 record. Senior Wendy Stratford leads the team with two goals for four points on the season. Four other Red Storm players are tied with one goal each on the season. Junior April Beck has already seen 315 minutes in goal, allowing three goals and recording 11 saves. Dixie has an experienced team with five seniors and eight juniors. They are returning three key players, senior Wendy Stratford who scored seven goals last season, Camille Peterson-Jensen who had five goals and seven assists for 17 points last year, and Jessica Michie who recorded six goals for 12 points in 2009. Last year when the two teams faced each other, the Red Storm defeated the Knights 3-0 the first game and 7-0 in the second.

Scouting Grand Canyon: The 'Lopes currently have a 2-1 record, and sit in fourth place in the PacWest standings. Sophomore Marina Nesic leads her team with three goals and two assists, for a total of eight points. Senior Kayla Poe is also off to a strong start with one goal and one assist for three points, and freshman Fiona Moloney and sophomore Sasha Scott each have one goal on the season. Junior Stephanie Phillips has seen the majority of the time in the net so far this season. She has allowed two goals and posted seven saves. The 'Lopes are led by just three seniors and six juniors. Last year Grand Canyon finished fifth in the PacWest with a 6-6-2 conference record. In the two meetings between the 'Lopes and the Urban Knights last season, the teams finished in a 2-2 tie the first game, and Grand Canyon defeated ART U 4-1 in the second game.

Looking ahead: After the two games this week, the Knights will be home for one more game to host Hawaii Hilo on September 22nd. With the conclusion of the homestand, ART U hits to the road to play in Hawaii starting on the 25th.
