HOME AGAIN
The Urban Knights opened conference play with one of the most difficult road trips of their season. ART U played four road matches in eight days covering two Islands in Hawaii. Even with the rigorous playing schedule the ART U women's basketball team had much to be proud of as they returned to San Francisco 2-2, which is their best finish in Hawaii thus far. Now back in San Francisco the Urban Knights gear up for a five game home stand which will start with a game against Dixie State College on Monday Jan 17.
BREAKING THE STREAK
The Urban Knights kicked a three year losing streak at Cannon Activities Center on Jan 10 by defeating the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders 73-70.
Despite a close start ART U maintained control of the contest for a majority of the game; leading by as many as 15 points before the half retired. The Urban Knights entered the locker room besting BYU-Hawaii's 44% shooting percentage by shooting 56% for the half.
Nicole DeRosier registered 16 of her team high 20 points in the first half alone.
Devin London set an Academy of Art school recorded by recording nine assists in one half. The previous record was held by now grad assistant
Sondra Stilwell who finished with eight assists in one half.
Freshman
Madeline Martin came up big for the Urban Knights in the win by coming away with two of her four steals within the final minutes of play. As a team the Urban Knights shot 45.6% from the field and 77% from the free-throw line.
Nicole DeRosier led all ART U players with 20 points, she also finished with four assists and two steals.
Verity Peets was next with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Jessica Nolan chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds. While
Devin London finished with 11 points and a career high 11 assists.
SCOUTING THE REDSTORM
Dixie State has dropped just one game thus far in their season. Prior to their mid-season defeat by the University of Alaska Anchorage, DSC had won eight straight games. Since the loss, the Redstorm have picked up three more wins heading into their match against ART U. Three players are among the top 10 scorers in the PacWest. Johnna Brown is leading the pack with 15.9 ppg. Brown is currently ranked fourth in scoring in the PacWest and is shooting 52% from the field and is averaging a team high 10.9 rebounds per game. Breann Hill is next on the Redstorm roster with 14.8 ppg. Hill is sixth in conference in scoring and has the teams' highest field goal percentage, 56%, highest free-throw percentage, 81%, and is leading the team in steals with 31. Sheila Adams rounds out the top with as 12.7 ppg average. Adams is DSC's leading three-point shooter, she is shooting 35% from long range and averages 2.4 three-point field goals made a game.
SCOUTING THE ANTELOPES
Grand Canyon is currently first in the PacWest Conference in scoring per game. The Lopes are averaging 79.6 points per game against their opponents. The Antelopes are 12-2 overall and 0-1 in conference. Their recent loss to Dixie State places Grand Canyon second to last just above BYU-Hawaii in the eighth place. The Lopes are led by three-time 2010-11 Player of the Week honoree Samantha Murphy. Murphy has been Grand Canyon's leading scorer in all but two games. Murphy is ranked first in the PacWest in scoring; the senior is averaging just over 24 points per game. Next on the team is Rosayln Nelson who is averaging 12.5 points per game, while Maylinn Smith is right behind her with 11.7 points per game.
KNIGHT TO WATCH
Senior forward
Jessica Nolan has been selected to the Pacific West Conference Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll for the fourth time this season. The award was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Jan. 10, for games contested Jan. 3-9.
Nolan helped lead the Urban Knights to a 1-1 start in conference play. The forward averaged 13 points and nine rebounds per game, finishing with a game high 14 points in ART U's victory of Chaminade University.
Nolan, who is fourth in the conference in shooting percentage, shot 59.1% (13 for 22) from the floor over the two games. She ranked sixth in the conference in scoring average for the week, and is 15th overall in the conference. Nolan currently ranks third in the PacWest in rebounds per game with 9.8.
