ACADEMY OF ART CONTINUES NON-PACWEST PLAY
Urban Knights baseball opens up its second series of the season this Friday coming off a 10-7 loss to Concordia (CA) last Saturday. Academy of Art University matches up with Cal State Stanislaus of the CCAA this week in a four-part series.
FIRST PITCH
The ART U-CSUS series begins with a single game this Friday, Feb. 11 at 2:00 PM. Day two, Saturday, Feb. 12, features a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM and then the series wraps up with a single game at 12:00 PM on Sunday, Feb. 13. All contests are scheduled to be held at Warrior Baseball Field in Turlock, CA. Live Stats and Live Video will be available for all games in this series.
KNIGHT WATCH
Through two games thus far, sophomore infielder Stefen Henderson is leading the team with four runs batted in and six total bases. With a 3-for-4 performance on Opening Day, Henderson knocked in both ART U runs on the third triple of his career. Five other Urban Knights registered two hits apiece at the end of the series and of those, junior catcher Kenny Rollins, Jr. finished with the highest on-base percentage (.571). Academy of Art has also totaled five stolen bases as team, led by two from senior outfielder Ryan Worley. Junior infielder Zach Babitt currently paces ART U with three runs scored.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
Cal State Stanislaus finished fifth overall in the 11-team California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA) last season. This year, of the 17 returning Warriors, three were All-CCAA selections including starting pitcher Andrew Stueve. Last season, only national runner-up UC San Diego had a better pitching staff (3.10 ERA) than the Warriors with Stueve posting the most strikeouts (55) and innings pitched (82.0) among starters. Offensively, CSUS returns outfielder David Contreras whose .337 batting average, 40 runs scored, and 31 RBIs were all second highest on the team in 2010. Contreras also led the team with 13 stolen bases. The Warriors finished up last season on a very strong note with a 19-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills and are scheduled to play two games against Central Washington (Feb. 9-10) prior to facing the Knights on Friday.
ART U OFFENSE FLEXES ITS MUSCLES IN 10-7 LOSS
Despite a pair of losses to start the season, Academy of Art University showed its offensive potential by unleashing a four-run seventh inning of its second game against Concordia University (CA) last Saturday. The Eagles came away with a 10-7 victory, but ART U stayed close throughout the contest with rallies in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Trailing 10-3 heading into the seventh, the Urban Knights worked a bases-loaded situation with no outs to put pressure on Concordia. Babitt, Henderson, senior outfielder Johnathan Robbins, and junior outfielder Niko Leite all knocked in runs during the scoring barrage.
LOOKING AHEAD
A three-game road series against Fresno Pacific (CA) is up next for the Knights. ART U first plays a single evening game on Feb. 18 at 5:00 PM, then follows with a doubleheader on Feb. 19 beginning at 11:00 AM.
