ART U GEARS UP FOR MEETING WITH SEA WARRIORS
Among last week's Academy of Art University baseball highlights was a nine-run inning in a 25-17 outburst against Grand Canyon. Though the Urban Knights were unable to top GCU in the series, the ART U offense has continued to shine through this season. Hawaii Pacific comes to town this week for five games and the year's first meeting with Academy of Art.
FIRST PITCH
The Urban Knights open up their second home series of the season this Sunday, Mar. 20. On the first day, ART U and HPU play a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM, then on Monday, Mar. 21, it will be a single night game set to start at 7:00 PM. The final day of action, Tuesday, Mar. 22, features another 12:00 PM doubleheader with the second contest a non-PacWest matchup. All games are scheduled to be held at Laney College in Oakland, CA. Live Stats and live score updates on the Academy of Art University Athletics Twitter will be available for all games in this series.
KNIGHT WATCH
Earning a place on the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for a stellar series against Grand Canyon, junior infielder Zach Babitt comes off an impressive week. In four starts, Babitt was 8-for-16 (.500) with seven runs batted in, six runs scored, and two doubles. He has upped his batting average to .279 and continues to add to one of the team's top on-base percentages (.402). Senior infielder Darnell Quinney has wielded a hot bat thus far and leads ART U with a .333 batting average, 15 RBIs, and six doubles. Senior outfielder Johnathan Robbins also remains atop the entire PacWest with 15 stolen bases. Emerging with a strong first start of the season, freshman righty Wade Broadstreet (0-2) threw the Knights' fourth complete game of the year on Mar. 12 versus GCU. He allowed just three earned runs and did not walk a batter in 6.0 innings of work.
SCOUTING THE SEA WARRIORS
After starting the season with a 2-8 record in non-PacWest action, Hawaii Pacific's offense came alive in three victories over Grand Canyon. Dixie State had the edge over HPU in a 3-1 series win to begin the Sea Warriors' longest roadtrip of the season. Most recently in Phoenix, Hawaii Pacific split with GCU on the first day and is scheduled to play a second doubleheader against the 'Lopes on Friday, Mar. 18. Offensively, the Sea Warriors are led by infielder Blake Amaral who sports a .411 batting average in 14 games, eight doubles, and is credited with the team's lone home run. In addition, infielder Kale Sumner has registered a team-high 19 RBIs with 12 runs scored. On the mound, starters Michael Greene (2-3) and Toby Inouye (4-1) have combined for 48 strikeouts thus far. When ART U and HPU met in the Bay Area last season, Hawaii Pacific eked out two of its victories by one run.
KNIGHTS' OFFENSE SCORES 27 RUNS DESPITE LOSSES TO ANTELOPES
In the season's first meeting of Academy of Art and Grand Canyon, GCU found a way to win despite two tightly played contests and at one point, an incredible scoring effort by both teams. The opening day of the series had the 'Lopes get ahead early and begin with a 7-1 victory, then a late-game ART U comeback in the second contest fell just short with the 7-5 final.
On day two, the squads combined for 42 runs in the first game which included a historic nine-run sixth inning by the Urban Knights. Seven different Academy of Art players registered two or more RBIs in the game (four apiece for Babitt and sophomore infielder Stefen Henderson) which eventually resulted in a 25-17 GCU win. ART U led in the first inning of the following contest, but a push by Grand Canyon midway through created a margin for the home team and the Knights again made a valiant comeback attempt, falling 6-4 in the end.
LOOKING AHEAD
A brief non-conference roadtrip is next on tap for Academy of Art following its series with HPU. The Knights travel out of state to Idaho for their four-game matchup with Northwest Nazarene on Mar. 25-26.
