Phoenix, AZ -- Currently amid the best Hawaii roadtrip in program history, the Academy of Art University women's basketball team has had one of its Urban Knights, sophomore forward
Alisa Griggs, named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week. ART U is 3-0 on the islands and Griggs has played a major role in the team's success. A consistent force inside all season, Griggs shot over 50 percent from the field in the wins while averaging 12.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ on Monday, Jan. 16 for games played Jan. 9-15.
The trip began with Academy of Art topping Hawaii-Hilo 58-46 on Jan. 9 in a game where Griggs had seven points, six rebounds, and a career-high four steals. Three of her thefts came during an impressive ART U second half in which the Knights scored 15 points off turnovers. Then, in a 64-43 victory over Chaminade on Jan. 11, the sophomore forward finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Acdemy of Art was again able to outmatch their opponent in the second half with Griggs converting three of her four shot attempts during that time. The third game of this four-part Hawaii swing featured Griggs' best game thus far as she posted 18 points (8-for-12 FG) and nine rebounds in ART U's 88-75 win at BYU-Hawaii. She helped lead the way from the very outset, scoring 14 in the opening half alone.
In three games on the islands, Griggs averaged 12.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. She shot 53.8% (14-for-26) from the floor in those contests and now ranks second in the conference in scoring (12.7 ppg) as well as fifth in rebounding (7.7 rpg). The Milwaukie, OR native has been the Knights' top scorer in half of their games thus far and the team's top rebounder in six of 14 contests.
This is the first Player of the Week honor for Griggs in her career after she had previously earned four Weekly Top 10 selections this season.
