KNIGHT WATCH
Still among the PacWest leaders in several offensive categories, Academy of Art saw
Jonmundur Gretarsson notch his second game-winning goal of the year to add to his team-lead this past week. In six attempts on goal this season, Gretarsson has connected on five occasions and was named to the
PacWest Weekly Final 5 most recently. He and
Aron Ekberg share the team's most assists (3) while
Frederik Nagel has four goals to his name as well. Overall, ART U has out-scored its opponents 18-11. The Knights have had two very strong performances in goal with
Luca Theis (15 saves, six goals allowed, six starts) and
Joshua Leader (11 saves, five goals allowed, four starts) each holding their own.
SEA LIONS ON POINT
After starting the year with losses to UC San Diego (#6 nationally) and Cal State Dominguez Hills, a pair of teams among the Top 10 in the NSCAA Continental Tire NCAA Division II Rankings, Point Loma rattled off three consecutive victories highlighted by a 7-0 rout of Southern Nazarene and a 3-0 win over Dominican to start PacWest play. The Sea Lions did not lose a PacWest contest until their most recent match, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hawaii Pacific (Oct. 5). During that stretch, PLNU tied NDNU and BYU-Hawaii 0-0 while topping UH Hilo 1-0 and Chaminade 4-0. Point Loma has thus far shared its offense among three Sea Lions, Daniel ten Bosch (4 goals, 6 assists), Griffin Fuller (4 G, 1 A), and Nico Tagaloa (3 G). It is ten Bosch who leads the conference in assists. Defensively, PLNU has relied heavily on Carter Phillips who has 37 saves and 12 goals allowed in over 1,005 minutes across all 11 starts. In the teams' only meeting to this point, Point Loma edged ART U 3-2 at the same CCSF field on which they will play this Saturday.
STORMY SEAS FOR DIXIE STATE
Chasing down win number one for the first 15 days of the season, Dixie State needed to weather the storm of three losses (2-0 to Seattle Pacific, 3-1 to Fresno Pacific, 2-0 to NDNU) and two ties (2-2 Northwest Nazarene, 1-1 Dominican) before it came. On Sept. 25, the Red Storm put away Hope International 3-1 and, following a 5-1 loss to Hawaii Pacific, triumphed 5-0 over Chaminade. Since that time, Dixie was downed by BYU-Hawaii 2-1 and fought to a 3-3 tie with UH Hilo on Oct. 5. The Red Storm will be at Holy Names on Oct. 12 prior to their Monday matchup with the Urban Knights. Led by Erik Shallenberger's four goals and three assists, Dixie offers five players with multi-goal efforts to date. The goalkeeping duties have been held by Tyler Walters who has logged 42 saves and 20 goals allowed in 895 minutes of work across 10 starts. Historically, Dixie State and Academy of Art have met six times with three of those swinging the Red Storm's way, two to ART U, and one a tie that came last September.
ART U COMES OUT BAY BATTLE 3-1
This past Friday, Oct. 4, amid muggy weather conditions and smoke from a regional grass fire, Academy of Art University Men's Soccer battled Holy Names into overtime out at Crocker Amazon Park. The match was scoreless through the end of regulation despite an 18-9 shot advantage for the Urban Knights and finished in the 95th minute when the Hawks executed a goal off a corner kick for the victory.
Then, in a rematch with Dominican that this time counted on each team's Pacific West Conference record, ART U used a goal by Gretarsson in the
83rd minute to end a scoreless tie and finish off the season sweep of the Penguins.
"We're just focusing on getting better," head coach
Mike Keller said. "We're looking to play a little bit better every game."
LOOKING AHEAD
Academy of Art hits the following Monday with a stop in Oakland on Oct. 19 prior to the four-match swing through Hawaii that includes Chaminade (Oct. 26), BYU-Hawaii (Oct. 28), UH Hilo (Oct. 31), and Hawaii Pacific (Nov. 2).
