Box Score
San Francisco, CA -- The Academy of Art University women's soccer team locked horns with Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday afternoon, and throughout the extremely close game, neither team was able to establish an advantage. Both teams had fantastic chances and both defenses stiffened against the attack, but in the end it was the Sea Lions who scored in the final two minutes to saddle the Urban Knights with a hard-luck 1-0 loss.
The Sea Lions got three shots off in the first 20 minutes of the game, but none of them made it close enough to even be on goal, and the ball was in the middle of the field as both teams battled for position for a good portion of the first half. ART U got a big chance when
Louise Fillingham lined up for her bread and butter, a set piece after a foul. Fillingham's shot curved around everyone, but knocked off the crossbar to keep it scoreless. Near the end of the half, an attack by
Beth Barker resulted in a penalty kick, but
Hannah Emmett's strike was again just too high, as it also hit the crossbar to preserve the 0-0 tie going into the half.
It was still 0-0 as the second half went on, but the Knights got into a little bit of a rhythm offensively, getting there shots in the first three minutes. In the 64th minute, Point Loma had a golden opportunity with a penalty kick of their own after a tough call on an inadvertent handball, but goalkeeper
Rachael Rempe showed off some quick reflexes as she pounced on the PK and sent it away. The Knights got three more shots, including a left-footer by Emmett that was just wide, but just as it looked like the teams were headed for extra time, Amanda Mitchell got a bounce of the free ice from Leah Porter and PLNU took a 1-0 lead with under two minutes to play.
That would hold to be the final score, as the Knights got one more shot from
Jasmin Leonhardt with 20 seconds to go that went wide. Both teams had turned it up a notch in the second half, as they combined for only seven shots in the first but 20 in the closing period, while ART U's two shots off the crossbar showed just how close you can get to a different outcome.
Academy of Art will play Dixie State on Monday before heading to Oakland and then Hawaii to play the island contingent of the PacWest.
