St. George, UT -- In their final day in Utah, the Academy of Art University baseball team showed that their pitching is still improving, but were unable to come away with a win as they fell to Dixie State in a doubleheader, losing the first game 6-0 and the finale 4-2. The Urban Knights fell victim to a stellar pitching performance in the opener and were only a few inches from preserving a lead in the second before ultimately losing to the Red Storm.
Austin Christiansen went the distance in an impressive performance for Dixie State in the opening act, striking out eight and only allowing two hits and two walks. The two hits for ART U both came in the first inning, when
Lyle "Kalani" Brackenridge had an infield single and
Stefen Henderson singled up the middle. The Knights had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but a groundout ended the threat and Christiansen settled into a groove.
Wade Broadstreet had a solid outing for the Urban Knights, pitching seven innings of his own and giving up six runs, but only four earned in his longest outing of the season. The Red Storm got their first run in the bottom of the first on a double, a passed ball, and a single. That was all they would need, but they would add three in there third and single runs in the fourth and sixth.
Most of the thump for Dixie State came from the top of the lineup, as Garrett Nash and Colton Yack combined for four hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored. For the Knights, Broadstreet struck out five and
Kai Fink threw a scoreless inning in the loss.
In the second game, Nick Boyett took the mound and was in control over the Red Storm lineup. In the second inning he got some help from his offense when
Ryan Ramirez hit a double to left.
Myles Babitt walked, and then
James Singzon's sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position. After fouling off four pitches,
Dante Redhead got the clutch hit, doubling down the right field line and driving in both runs to give ART U a 2-0 lead.
Boyett settled down, striking out two in the second and inducing a double play in the third. He was arduously close to getting out of the fourth unscathed, but some bad luck came his way. The Red Storm got three hits to start the inning, making it a 2-1 game with runners on second and third with no outs. But Boyett struck out Kris Kaplan, and then snagged a line drive back to him by Ryan Wescott with a chance at a double play. But Boyett's throw was offline allowing both runners to score and putting the Red Storm up 3-2.
Academy of Art got another double in their half of the fifth but after a walk to Henderson, they ended up stranding two. Dixie added another in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, and the Knights went down in order in the sixth and the seventh to seal the series sweep for the Red Storm.
Leite and Redhead both had multi-hit days for ART U, while Boyett added three strikeouts. Kody Christoffersen won his second game of the year, while Bryce Anderson picked up the save for Dixie State.
The Knights will be back in action in a week against PacWest newcomers Fresno Pacific. There will be a doubleheader on Friday starting at 12PM and Saturday, also at 12PM, with all games played at Laney College.
