Women's Hoops Goes Big To End Off-Season

San Francisco, CA - After a whirlwind of an off-season, Academy of Art University women's basketball coach LaNay Larson completed her recruiting class with a big addition to the Urban Knights squad.  Aleigh Krug, a 6'4 center who played for Portland State as a freshman, will be the tallest player in history to suit up for ART U women's hoops, and marks the third Division I transfer who will be joining the team for the 2013-14 season.

"Aleigh was an unexpected surprise that we feel very fortunate to be able to welcome to the Urban Knight family. Our roster was essentially set but when Aleigh was granted her release we felt like she was definitely someone who could come in and add great size and strength to our post position," said head coach LaNay Larson. "After spending her freshman year battling injuries and illness we are excited to see her healthy and ready to dominate the paint. We are very excited to be able to add a student-athlete of her caliber to a team we feel has the pieces to make some great things happen this year."

Hailing from Truckee, CA, Krug lives in the Golden State but played basketball in the Silver State, as Truckee's proximity to the California-Nevada border put the Wolverines into Nevada territory for high school sports. Krug traveled down to Sacramento to play club basketball, playing for head coach Michelle Massari of the NorCal Sparks before committing to Portland State last year. A highly touted prospect, Krug turned down offers from other D-I programs like St. Mary's and Utah State before heading north to play for the Vikings.

After graduating five seniors last year, including post players Katy Wade and Juliua Fraser, Krug will add that combination of size and skill that is sought after by all basketball programs. She was a high school standout, earning First Team All-State in Nevada and first team All-Mount Rose League honoree as a junior after averaging 12.6 points, 8.6 rebounds. and 2.1 blocks per contest. That backed up a breakout sophomore season for Truckee High School where she earned First Team All-Mount Rose League and Second Team All-State honors and led her team to a Mount Rose League Championship and a third-place finish in the state tournament.

Aleigh joins fellow Division I transfers Krystal Forthan (LSU) and Molly O'Brien (Wichita State) along with high school standouts D'Andree Galipeau and Irene Aranda to complete 2013 recruiting class.
