Box Score San Francisco, CA — Time was running off the clock. The 10-second countdown was already being sounded as Thursday's Pacific West Conference women's soccer game between BYU-Hawaii and Academy of Art University was heading for a 0-0 draw.
Â
But in a flurry, the poised ART U junior forward Réa Laudat placed the ball at the base of the corner flag and let a last-second corner kick fly. That corner kick would "Bend Like Beckham" all the way into the net for a game-winning goal with just four seconds left, handing the Urban Knights a 1-0 double overtime win over the Seasiders.
Â
Just seconds before, senior
Louise Fillingham launched a free kick towards the box with less than 15 seconds left. None of the Urban Knights (2-10-1, 2-5 PacWest) was able to put a shot on goal, but a BYU-Hawaii (3-10, 2-6 PacWest) defender touched the ball before it went out of bounds, leading to Laudat's game-winning free kick.
Â
The two teams played deadlocked soccer for over 109 minutes with neither able to break through with a score. BYU-Hawaii dominated the shots category 22-11, but the Academy of Art defense held strong. Senior goalkeeper
Rachael Rempe logged her first shutout of the season while making 10 saves.
Â
Meanwhile, the ART U offense slowly began to take over, eventually turning a 10-0 shots deficit in the first half into a 4-1 shots lead and a game-winning goal in the second overtime.
Â
The win snapped the Urban Knights' five-game losing streak and extended the Seasiders' skid to six straight.
Â
The Urban Knights next face Chaminade, who played to a 0-0 draw at Notre Dame de Namur Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at CCSF.
