Sunbirds Shut Down Women's Soccer

Box Score FRESNO, Calif. — Three different goal scorers and a strong defensive effort kept the Academy of Art University women's soccer team at bay Thursday night, as Fresno Pacific defeated the Urban Knights 3-0 in a Pacific West Conference game at Ramirez Field.

Jenna Thomason, Jerrica Babb and Tori Sena each scored for the Sunbirds (4-5-1, 4-1-1 PacWest), who extended their unbeaten streak to five games and winning streak to four straight. The Urban Knights (1-8-1, 1-3 PacWest) fell for the third straight time, though it was their first shutout defeat since a 2-0 setback at then-No. 22 ranked Sonoma State on Sept. 19.

Thomason put the Sunbirds on the board first in the 10th minute with a solo goal. She took over possession of the ball inside the box, then turned and fired left and low for the score. Babb would add to FPU's lead 7 1/2 minutes before halftime on a through pass from Paige Jano, beating ART U's defensive backline for a 1-on-1 situation versus Mikayla Martig, who was making her first career start in goal for the Urban Knights.

Sena iced the game for Fresno Pacific in the 60th minute with her first goal of the season. Babb attacked the goalkeeper box with the ball, then sent a quick pass to Sena who fired outside the box to give FPU a 3-0 lead.

Fresno Pacific led the shots category 19-9 and was aggressive all night, getting called for offsides a game-high six times. Martig made seven saves in her first start as goalkeeper, while FPU 'keepers Summer Hammond and Vanessa Escobar combined for the shutout win.

Academy of Art travels to Southern California next week for two PacWest Conference matches. Thursday the Urban Knights face Cal Baptist in Riverside, then Saturday they take on Point Loma Nazarene.
