Box Score
San Francisco, CA – Academy of Art University Women's Basketball paid back the team responsible for their only PacWest Conference loss, Holy Names, Thursday night with an 83-69 victory hosting the Hawks at Kezar Pavilion. In the classic Urban Knights style, ART U scored 21 points off 20 HNU turnovers with double-doubles from
Jasmin Guinn (17 points, 12 rebounds) and
Krystal Forthan (13 points, 12 rebounds) combining with strong offensive games from
Sha'Nice Storey (19 points) and
Regina Camera (15 points).
Eager to avenge the Jan. 14 overtime loss to the Hawks in Oakland, Academy of Art went right to work with Storey getting a fastbreak layup off Camera's feed for the first basket of the game. Holy Names was, knowing the value of a team's homecourt, came right back and it seemed that neither team could gain much of a margin as the sides were tied 12-12 midway through. ART U registered assists on its first six buckets, displaying unselfishness early on.
From knotted up at 12, the Urban Knights stormed ahead with a 16-5 run that started with two layups by Guinn and later a pair by Camera. The Hawks struggled to score and became a rather one-dimensional team with Britney Machado-Potestio scoring 16 of HNU's 29 first half points.
ART U kept their lead around double digits as Guinn found
Molly O'Brien for a triple on a fastbreak and four points by Guinn in the final 52 seconds put the Knights up 12, leading 41-29 at the half. The second period began much like the first with Storey scoring inside and numerous free throws helping further an 11-0 run connecting the halves.
Camera's three-point play capped that surge and later she added another layup and free throws to maintain the separation.
Madeline Martin did a nice job of finding her teammates in great positions to score as she set up
Zoie Sheng and O'Brien for big 3-pointers within a two-minute span. Then Martin herself knocked down a jumper off one of Forthan's five in-rhythm assists. Martin returned the favor on the next play and the ART U lead remained at 14.
Storey's only three-point field goal of the game (which puts her now one behind
Jordan Rogers, the career leader) came next, keeping a Holy Names comeback an illusion. Forthan and Storey scored back-to-back layups to push the lead to 18, but a 9-2 Hawks response brought them to within 11, their closest since the tail end of the first half.
A Forthan layup shortly thereafter sealed the deal with 3:39 left, ensuring the seventh consecutive victory by the top team in the Pacific West Conference, Academy of Art University. The final score from Kezar Pavilion was 83-69.
It was the typical balanced scoring attack for ART U, now 17-6 overall, 14-1 in conference, led by Storey's 19 points (8-of-18 FG) and complemented by a stellar performance by Camera with 15 points, six assists, no turnovers, and four steals. Double-doubles were each had by Guinn, whose 17 points and 12 rebounds were enhanced by five assists and no turnovers, and Forthan (13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, five blocks). It was Guinn's eighth double-double of the season and Forthan's ninth, but also her eighth in a row.
Holy Names falls to 9-12 overall and 5-10 in PacWest play with the loss. Machado-Potestio finished with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, but just one other Hawk scored in double figures as Sonia Aguilar had 11 points despite going 4-of-20. Renique Fitzpatrick added 12 rebounds.
Celebrating their PacWest Conference Tournament Championship from last season, members of the 2013 team received their championship rings prior to the men's game Thursday in a special moment for the squad.
The Urban Knights have another Bay Area rematch coming up this Saturday, Feb. 15 at Notre Dame de Namur. Just last Saturday, ART U defeated NDNU 93-66 as part of their now seven-game win streak.
