2014 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships Results (Day 2)
Winston-Salem, NC -- ART U Track & Field closed out its 2013-14 indoor season with an exclamation mark as four Urban Knights left it all on the track, earning NCAA All-American honors in the 4x400m relay. On the final day of the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track & Field Championships, Academy of Art's foursome of
Dinesha Bean,
Dominique Berry,
Mistic Scott, and
Keanna Moody  captured second overall with an inspired performance. Bean also put forth a strong finish in 60m hurdles.
"Relays are often a measure of what you have in your team," head coach
Charles Ryan said "The 4x100 is a sign of your team's skill and the 4x400 is a representation of your team's heart! Today our ladies represented ART U to the best of their abilities and showed all heart! An All-American second place performance is something that I will remember forever. We came in as the #8 seed and stepped up when it mattered most."
In the relay's second heat, Academy of Art found itself in a dogfight for the top spot with the four from Mary in the early going. The sprinters approached their first handoff and, in a shocking turn of events, Mary's team dropped the baton which immediately created an opening for Berry. Securing their baton without trouble, the Urban Knights then assumed a commanding lead.
Mary would recover, however, and into Scott's leg, they had managed to go back in front. Still, Berry and Scott had kept ART U in good pace and it would seem to come down to a small margin for Moody to try to make up in her 400m. Heading into the final stretch, Moody made her move and triumphantly edged the Mary anchor for a 3:47.24 which won the heat. Johnson C. Smith's team would take first in the final of three heats though Academy of Art had confidently secured its All-American status.
"
Dinesha Bean took on a new task in running the lead off for us," Coach Ryan said. "She responded well and put us in a great position.
Mistic Scott has really come a long way in her freshman year. She grows with every race and I'm very excited about her future.
Keanna Moody ran an amazing anchor for us, showing a glimpse of how great she can be if she just keeps working.
Dominique Berry is a senior who came back especially for this indoor season only and I'm so proud that she got to end it on the track as an All-American."
In individual action, Bean, who came into this weekend with a season-best of 8.44 from the Adams State Early Grizzly Open, was right in the mix in the middle of Saturday's 60mH final pack. She had already secured an All-American honor, but her time of 8.42 became her new low for 2013-14. Bean took fifth place overall, just 0.03 behind Lincoln's Ladonna Richards, and ahead of Adams State's Ackiesha Burnett (8.43).
"The ladies showed a lot of guts today," Coach Ryan said. "Bean has been working her way back from injury all indoor season and represented herself well; All-American, top 5 finish? We will take that! I'm proud of her."
The Urban Knights will now exclusively compete in their outdoor season with the Hornet Invitational at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium coming up on Saturday, Mar. 22.
