Comeback Bid Comes Up Short As ART U Falls

Box Score

Oakland, CA -- Resuming a game made it through only one pitch of on Wednesday, the Academy of Art University baseball team, the Urban Knights rallied for the third day in a row against Hawaii Pacific but fell late to the Sea Warriors at Laney College. ART U came from behind two times, but HPU scored four times in the final two innings to come away with a 7-3 win.

HPU got on board first, scoring a run off of freshman Josh Lopez. Derek Nakasato hit a one out double, and two batters later Kevin Lenik singled him in. Academy of Art would respond right away in their half of the inning. Kalani Brackenridge singled to lead off the inning, and Jordan Thomas followed with a sacrifice bunt. After an infield single by Joseph Marchini, first baseman Daniel Skinner lofted a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

The Sea Warriors would jump back in front in the third inning, as Tyler Tokunaga led off with a triple. He would score on a single from Codey Ellenwood, and although HPU got another double after that, Lopez got out of the jam only down 2-1. ART U would come right back, as Jordan Thomas singled on a ground ball back to the pitcher. Marchini followed with a double to left center, and Skinner had his second sacrifice fly of the day, tying the game at 2-2. But there were still runners in scoring position, and Kevin Decker followed up with a single that score Marchini, and the Knights were up 3-2.

Jordan Oshiro led off the very next inning with a double, and after Lopez got two outs with runners on first and third, Lopez got a bunt back to him on a squeeze play but the flip home was not in time, and the game was tied back up 3-3

Agains the Knights bullpen, Hawaii Pacific put up a three-spot in the sixth, as a triple from Nakasato scored two runs and a double by Ellenwood made it a 6-3 game. Dylan Rodrigues, who had come out of the pen in the fifth, walked Lenik intentionally, and induced a double play grounder to shortstop to end the inning, but the damage was done.

ART U got a single in the bottom of the sixth and another single in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to move those runners into scoring position, as HPU got one more run in the top of the seventh to make it 7-3, which proved to be the final score.

For the Knights, Brackenridge was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double, while Marchini, Redhead, and Daniel Gutierrez each added a pair of hits. Brandon Poulson finished the game for ART U, rebounding from his wet outing on Tuesday by recording the final two outs of the seventh inning on strikeouts.

They'll be back in action tomorrow evening as they start a three-game non-conference series against Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock.Â
