Edwards Claims Second Regional Athlete of Year

Jordan Edwards
secured the title of NCAA Division II West Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, adding the outdoor honor to his award from indoor season in a Friday announcement by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The honor comes less than a week from the start of the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.

"This year has been full of exciting achievements for me," Edwards said. "I have been getting better and better each week and it feels great. It really helps and allows me not to be discouraged when I see all this progress each week. I am honored to receive this award."

Each of the regions, which are the same as those used during the Division II cross country season, honored both genders' top track athletes and field athletes and the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

"It's always an honor to have one of your athletes voted Regional Athlete of the Year," head coach Charles Ryan said. "It's a tough award to win and this is a testament to the level of respect Jordan has earned himself at the regional level from the coaches all throughout the West Region. He had a great regular season and now it's time to go run in championship season. Everything that has taken place this year is simply a build up to this moment; it's time for Jordan to seize it."

Edwards, named National Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA after his incredible weekend at the 2014 PacWest Championships, is ranked in the nation's Top 10 in all three short sprints events: No. 2 at 400m (46.36), No. 5 at 100m (10.32), and No. 7 at 200m (20.89). Additionally, he is part of the 4x100m and 4x400m relay squads which rank in the country's Top 20. He won all three individual sprint events at the PacWest Championships and ran legs of both winning relays en route to being named PacWest Most Valuable Athlete. He will run both at 200m and 400m at the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships, in addition to both relays.

Many of the regionally honored athletes and coaches will be in competition at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships set for May 22-24, in Allendale, Michigan, at Grand Valley State's Lax Field/Track Complex. The meet can be streamed online live at NCAA.org, and more information can be found at the USTFCCCA's National Championships Central page.
