ART U Posts Strong First Half Effort in Loss

Box Score

Turlock, CA — For the second time this season the Academy of Art University women's soccer team held a 2013 NCAA Tournament team scoreless for over 50 minutes. But like the first time, it was the opponent who came away with the victory Saturday, as No. 8-ranked Cal State Stanislaus defeated the Urban Knights 4-0 in the final game of the Warrior Challenge at Warrior Field.

ART U (0-4) contained the explosive Cal State Stanislaus offense during the first half to head into the break with a 0-0 tie. The Knights also shut out Cal State Stanislaus' leading scorer Jade Poon, who took four shots but put none on goal.

The Warriors (5-0) nearly scored twice in the final three minutes of the opening stanza. At the three minute mark they had a shot bang off the cross bar. Seconds later it was followed by a ball that actually found the back of the net, but the goal was waved off because of an inadvertent handball by Cal State Stanislaus.

The Warriors led the first half shooting category 11-0, as Academy of Art put most of their efforts on defense. Cal State Stanislaus would take 25 shots on the night for a 25-2 edge and earn 17 corner kicks – 12 in the second half alone.

Senior goalkeeper Rachael Rempe made nine more saves Saturday to make 18 total for the weekend, earning her the Warrior Challenge Golden Glove award for top goalkeeper.

The hosts finally broke through in the 55th minute when Mikayla Clifford scored her first of two goals on the night off of a misdirected clear. The Urban Knights were trying to get the ball away from the box and instead sent it straight to Clifford, who corralled the ball and fired low and left for a 1-0 lead.

She scored again 10 minutes later from nearly the same spot inside the box after receiving a long pass from Karli Nestler, making it 2-0. Kirsten Coleman also had two goals on the night, both with her head off of corner kicks. Her first came just three minutes after Clifford's second score, as she found the net off of Jordan Moineau's lob from the corner to make it 3-0. The second came in the 77th minute and was nearly identical – a header goal from Moineau's corner – making it 4-0

Humboldt State was named the Warrior Challenge champion by going 2-0 and having the largest goal differential after a 4-2 win over Simon Fraser earlier Saturday. Sophomore defender Mariandrea Otero Molano was also named to the Warrior Challenge All-Tournament Team for her defensive efforts in shutting down the No. 8 team in the nation during the first half.

Academy of Art University returns home Wednesday to face Cal State East Bay at 11 a.m. at Crocker Amazon Park.
