Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Urban Knights had multiple breakout performances on Saturday evening inside Van Dyne Gym, but it was not enough to stop to California Baptist who split the season series with a 91-67 victory. Junior guard
Jasmin Guinn posted a career-high 20 points while junior center
Caron Brown scored a season-best 15 points in the loss.
"We are going through a rough stretch right now and being tested, but it's a long season and I believe in this team and their ability to regroup and get their confidence back," said head coach
LaNay Larson. "We will continue to learn from our mistakes and it is one game at a time to give us a chance to achieve our goals."
ART U started hot, making four of their first five shots including 3-pointers by Guinn and junior guard
Sha'Nice Storey to go up 12-6 early. CBU soon responded with a 7-2 run ended by a triple by Kamille Diaz to give the Lancers a two-point lead midway through the opening period.
From tied 24-24, the Lancers executed a 19-3 run and were on their way to a 20-point lead at halftime, but senior guard
Molly O'Brien hit two free throws then picked up a steal then assisted the Storey layup to make it 46-33 California Baptist at the break.
In the second half, a Brown layup was backed up by Guinn's second 3-pointer of the evening to cut the margin down to eight points at 55-47, however, CBU came back with a 13-2 run to get up by 19 midway through. Guinn free throws along with a fastbreak layup then started what would become a 7-0 run that O'Brien capped with a 3-pointer. The 12-point difference was as close as ART U would come as the Lancers finished off the game, winning 91-67.
Academy of Art, now 9-5 overall and 4-2 in PacWest play, was led by a career-high 20 points (7-for-11 FG) from Guinn along with five rebounds. Brown added a season-high 15 points (7-for-14 FG) and six rebounds while O'Brien contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Storey was the fourth Urban Knight to score in double figures (11 points), hitting one 3-pointer, and junior guard
Zoie Sheng did a little bit of everything, finishing with seven points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists.
"I thought Jasmin made some great adjustments offensively in the second half and played tough defense like she always does, but that really stood out on a night when we struggled in some areas," said Larson. "Caron played probably her best game of the season and did things we have known she is capable of. We are looking for her to build on that and continue to improve to be a force in the paint."
California Baptist improved to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in PacWest. The Lancers were led by 20 points apiece from Cassidy Mihalko and Darsha Burnside while Burnside added a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Urban Knights turn around and play Azusa Pacific once again on Monday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m. to continue the Southern California roadtrip.
