2015 Sonoma State Fall Invitational Results (Day 1)ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sophomore
Oskar Frick did what no Academy of Art University men's golfer has ever done to start the Sonoma State Fall Invitational at Foxtail Golf Club on Monday. Backing up a career-low 67 opening round with a 68 in round two, Frick became the first Urban Knight to shoot sub-70s in his first two trips through 18 holes, holding the first place position after day one. As a team, ART U sits fifth and just one stroke back of UC San Diego.
"This is my best round so far and I felt really comfortable about it," said Frick. "I had a lot of patience and did not think ahead of myself. [Making history] means a lot to me. I have been working hard this summer to get my swing right and it just feels great to be in contention. Let's see what happens tomorrow. It's not over yet."
Just one week after his
career-low of 72 at the InterWest Wildcat Classic, Frick dropped to a new personal record of 67 to start the SSU Fall Invite. That mark, which only one golfer in the history of ART U's program has ever bested (
Stuart Favretto's 66 in 2012) would be backed up by a 68 from Frick in round two, composing a 135 good for first overall out of 69 golfers. He is currently nine under par and has a three-stroke lead on the next closest competitor, William Jessup's Johnnie Greco.
"Oskar just looks like he is becoming comfortable with himself and trusting his game," said head coach Andy Moren. "It's really fun watching him play today."In a tie for ninth individually, senior
Cody Moore was strong in his first two rounds as well. He offered back-to-back scores of 72 for a combined 144. The third finisher for Academy of Art was freshman
Jose Lopez Butron with the best round of his collegiate career, a 73 to start, followed by a 77 for a total of 150 which put him tied for 31st. The sophomore tandem of
Daniel Cosgrove and
Gustavo Romero are each tied for 62nd with combined scores of 165.
"The rest of the team is doing their best to stay in contention and I thought Cody continued his solid play," said Moren.
Through the first two rounds, host Sonoma State is leading the pack with a 576 followed by Dominican's 579. As a squad, the Urban Knights are fifth of 12 teams with a 587 combined score and remain only a single stroke back of UCSD (586).
ART U returns to the Foxtail Golf Club links for the third and final round of the tournament tomorrow at 8 a.m.
