Taking on a Sonoma State team that has reached the NCAA Division II postseason in each of the past six seasons, Academy of Art gave the Seawolves a fight and broke through for 13 hits in game two, but SSU prevailed twice in a Wednesday doubleheader. ART U was within striking distance in both games out a Seawolf Field, however, nine unearned runs out of 11 total by Sonoma State ended up being be the difference in final scores of 4-1 and 7-5.
The Urban Knights put runners on in each of the first two innings, but Amanada Llerena (6-2), the 2014 California Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Pitcher, exited both frames unscathed. In the bottom of the second, a fielding error that would have ended the inning ended up leading to a three-run swing for SSU.
Both sides were quiet in the third, but a mistake by
Brenna Mitchell (6-2) to Taylor Batey resulted in a solo home run and a 4-0 score. In the bottom of the fifth, two singles set up a potentially dangerous sequence with a ball to center, but it ended up becoming a triple play as senior outfielder
Haily MacDonald caught the ball, fired to junior catcher
Elise Oldham for the second out, and she threw to sophomore shortstop
Jessica West for the third.
Academy of Art would come back to score once on a run-scoring single by Oldham in the sixth, but the Seawolves held on to win 4-1. Mitchell logged her fourth complete game of the season with one earned run allowed on seven hits, no walks, and one strikeout.
Unfortunately the start of game two was much like the opener as an error in the bottom of the first led to a three-run, four-hit rally by Sonoma State. Senior
Kamyle Glover (0-0) came on in relief and stopped the SSU offense, enabling her team to score twice in the inning that followed where sophomore
Hallie Curtis provided the third of three singles to drive in West. Senior
Jasmine Dickenson scored thereafter as ART U attempted a double steal and got caught, but not before Dickenson touched home plate.
A 3-2 game then became 6-2 in the second when another Seawolves rally expanded the margin. The run scoring continued into the third where three Academy of Art seniors each singled, ending with
Taylor Thurman's hit to plate MacDonald. The Knights had a chance to cut the lead further when they loaded the bases in the fourth, but it was not to be.
Sonoma State went up 7-3 in the sixth and, with their final chance in the seventh, ART U strung together four straight hits for the possibility of a huge comeback. Glover led off with a double and came in on Thurman's single. Then singles by graduate student
Nirana Singh and West loaded the bases with still none out. Two groundouts produced one run, but a popout ended the game 7-5 in favor of SSU.
For the now 8-4 Urban Knights, seven different players registered a multi-hit game on Wednesday highlighted by Oldham's 2-for-3 game one that included a run batted in and Thurman's 2-for-4 game two which saw her drive in a pair. After a solid effort by Mitchell in the opener, Glover allowed only a single earned run in 5.1 innings in relief in the nightcap.
Sonoma State moves to 11-3 on the year thanks in large part to Ancia Purdy's 4-for-7 day at the plate that featured two RBIs, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Batey had the afternoon's lone home run on either side in her 1-for-3 game one. Llerena finished off the complete game victory in game one with one run allowed on five hits and six strikeouts while Mayleen Mazon won the second contest after 6.0 innings with two earned runs allowed on nine hits.
"Sonoma state is a very good team," said head coach
Sonja Garnett. "Llerena threw a great game one and we made errors game two and left runners on. At the plate we need to adjust quicker and defensively we have a couple of small things to work on. Each day we have to get better."
ART U next faces #20 Humboldt State on Monday, Mar. 3 in a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
