SAN FRANCISCO – Production in the paint and from the free throw line were the difference Monday as Point Loma came out on top 82-65 in its Pacific West Conference matchup with Academy of Art University. The Sea Lions scored over 80 percent of their points either around the basket or at the foul line and built upon a halftime advantage despite a game-high 20 points from junior guard Zoie Sheng.
Point Loma went up by five out of the gate and eventually pushed a double-digit advantage on an 8-0 run to go up 22-9 midway through. Junior guard Jasmin Guinn helped keep her team in it by scoring all six points in a 6-0 response that included a three-point play conversion after redshirt senior guard Madeline Martin found her in the paint.
A triple by junior guard Regina Camera then her free throws and a pair from junior center Caron Brown cut down the margin, fueling what would become a 9-3 push to tie things up 29-29 with four minutes and 16 seconds left. Sheng's 3-pointer forced the deadlock, but Point Loma came back with a steady 12-5 effort to go up 41-34 at the half.
Although senior guard Molly O'Brien started the second half with a jumper, the Sea Lions scored seven unanswered and were ahead by double digits thereafter. The Knights kept the margin from getting much beyond 12 points for the next 10 minutes then back-to-back layups by Camera and O'Brien made it an eight-point game with 3:56 left. The chance to strike was nullified, however, due to a 12-0 PLNU run that included 10 made free throws and the game finished with the Sea Lions on top 82-65.
Academy of Art is now 12-9 overall and 7-6 in its conference pairings. Sheng finished with a team-high 20 points and four rebounds while Camera added 12 points off the bench and Guinn contributed 10 points almost exclusively from the foul line where she was 8-for-9 in the contest.
Five Sea Lions scored in double figures led by Jessica Escorza's 20 points (11-for-12 FT). PLNU moves to 12-9 overall and 10-4 in PacWest play.
ART U stays local for its next matchup, a Feb. 7 trip across the bay to Holy Names. The Urban Knights and Hawks tip off at 2:00 p.m.
