WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Hawaii Pacific found success Saturday with only one out remaining, scoring 16 with two outs and sweeping a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader from Academy of Art University by scores of 11-2 and 12-0 at Hans L'Orange Park.
Â
The Sharks (25-20, 15-15 PacWest) outhit the Urban Knights (7-33, 4-22 PacWest) 28-11 and scored in 14 of 16 turns at bat during the twin bill. Academy of Art collected 11 hits of its own but stranded 10 runners and was only able to put two runs on the board in the ninth inning of game one.
Â
Junior relief pitcher
Jacob Green set a new Academy of Art single-season record for pitching appearances when he made his 23rd and 24th showings Saturday. He threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up just one run and issued only one walk.
Â
Junior center fielder
Joseph Marchini stretched his current hit streak to four games with a 2-for-7 day. Sophomore right fielder
Daniel Gutierrez had hits in both games to give him a three-game hit streak.
Â
GAME ONEÂ
Hawaii Pacific scored in six straight innings from the second to the sixth, building an 11-0 lead when it was all said and done. Four Sharks had multi-hit games in the opener. The main culprit was leadoff hitter Jordan Oshiro who went 4-for-5 with an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Â
Starting pitching was also solid for HPU, with game one starter Rico Garcia (6-4) throwing eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. ART U senior starting pitcher
Maclane Brady (2-8) went 5 2/3 innings and gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts.
Â
It was pinch hitters
Jordan Thomas and
Harrison Greenough who got the Urban Knights going in the top of the ninth. Thomas singled on a 2-0 pitch, then scored when Greenough followed with a double to deep left-center field. Two batters later, senior catcher
Chucky Cavestany hit a two-out, two-strike double to right-center, scoring Greenough and making it 11-2.
Â
GAME TWOÂ
The Sharks scored all 12 of their runs in the nightcap with two outs. Four of those runs were scored after the first two batters of the inning were put out.
Â
Starting pitching again helped HPU. Harley Holt threw seven scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out five with no walks. The relief was also solid as Dorian Rivera and Nick Camarena each threw one scoreless inning of relief.
Â
Gutierrez had ART U's lone extra-base hit in the game with a double in the sixth. Brady and Edmunds also had hits in game two. Senior reliever
Nick Giotta threw an inning of relief, giving up just one unearned run on one hit and no walks.
Â
Steven Camberos led the way for the Sharks in game two, going 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base. James Carraway (2-for-4, two runs) and Oshiro (2-for-6, three RBIs) also had multi-hit games.
Â
The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon HST Sunday.
