KANEOHE, Hawaii – On the islands for the start of Pacific West Conference play, Academy of Art University women's soccer brought the rain – literally and figuratively.
Following a tightly played scoreless first half, sophomore midfielder
Aliya Salas broke free for a rebound shot into the net then tough defense amid rainy and mucky conditions would lead to a 1-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific for ART U and freshman goalkeeper
Morgan Wirz's first career shutout out at Atherton Field on Saturday.
"We anticipated that weather might be a factor so we just said go into this match with the mentality that we need to play collective defense and our team did really well with that," said head coach
Katie Awerkamp. "It wasn't pretty and both teams were struggling to establish a style of play, but we stayed strong defensively and played smart."
Well-played soccer in the midfield by both sides held the Urban Knights and Sharks to not a single shot through the first 32 minutes. It was freshman midfielder
Alice Michell who did the honors as that gave way to a flurry of action in the final eight minutes. HPU put two of four on frame, but Wirz made the save in both instances to keep the match tied 0-0.

"At the half, the message was: Whomever outworks the other and gets those 50-50 balls will win this match," said Awerkamp.
Out of halftime, a corner kick by Michell in the 51st minute set up the opportunity Academy of Art had been waiting for. Salas collected the rebound off a scramble following the cross and sent it into the bottom left corner of the net. As if on cue, the conditions became rainier and muddier from that point on with Hawaii Pacific pushing to answer back.
Though the Sharks would proceed to send seven more shots at Wirz in the second half, she was there each and every time. Her dives and impressive saves considering the slippery conditions made it no surprise that very little blue was visible on her goalkeeper uniform by the match's end. HPU fought until the final buzzer, attempting three shots in the final two and half minutes, but the end result was a 1-0 celebration for the Knights.
With the victory, Academy of Art improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in PacWest play. It is the third win for ART U in its past four meetings with Hawaii Pacific. Salas' first goal in an Urban Knight uniform made her the eighth artist-athlete to register points this season. Wirz picked up her first collegiate shutout, her first goalkeeper win, and earned both with a season-best nine saves on the day.
"Morgan came up huge and that's a confidence builder for our back line," said Awerkamp. "We've been trying to find flow back there so what a huge day for her and the defense. We're happy with the way we played."
Hawaii Pacific drops to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss. Despite Erika Ellis' nine shots (three on frame), she finished Saturday without a goal.
ART U makes its second Hawaii stop at BYU-Hawaii on Monday, Sept. 28 at 12:30 p.m. HT (3:30 p.m. PT).
"It's going to be a tough match," said Awerkamp. "Teams [in Hawaii] are physical, scrappy, and have good work rates. We have to refocus tomorrow and we are certainly hoping for better weather. Regardless, we have to come prepared."
