LAIE, Hawaii – For the second consecutive season, Academy of Art University women's soccer emerged from a second overtime period 1-0 winners over BYU-Hawaii. Sophomore midfielder
Kendall Bozart took the role of heroine on Monday out at BYUH Soccer Field, scoring off sophomore midfielder
Aliya Salas' pass in the 105th minute.
"We reorganized mentally at halftime and reiterated that we couldn't be lazy on defense," said head coach
Katie Awerkamp. "Morgan [Wirz] played well particularly in the second half. In overtime, Aliya got space to play an amazing ball to Kendall one-on-one with the goalkeeper and she scored a beautiful goal."
In San Francisco in 2014, Academy of Art University women's soccer and BYU-Hawaii played over 109 minutes of scoreless soccer before
Réa Laudat bent a corner kick into the goal for the
dramatic victory. A similar progression occurred on this day in Hawaii as the teams combined for just one shot on frame in a quiet first half.
BYUH's Kate Gurney broke free for an attempt in the 26th minute, but
PacWest Defender of the Week Morgan Wirz was there to make the save. Out of a scoreless halftime, Wirz and the ART U defense faced two more shots on goal in the first 20 minutes, turning both away to keep the match at 0-0.
That tie would hold up through not just the end of regulation, but the first extra period as well. A prime winning opportunity came for the Seasiders in the 97th minute, however, Wirz was there in a crucial moment yet again. Just over four minutes into the second extra period, Salas sent the ball to Bozart in the box and a shot over the goalkeeper's head to the back post.
"It has been great to have a variety of people stepping up and I was happy to see Kendall with the goal," said Awerkamp.
Academy of Art improves to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in PacWest play with the victory. The goal by Bozart was the first in her career and Salas' offered her first assist as an Urban Knight. Defensively, Wirz collected her second consecutive shutout, registering five saves in just over 104 minutes of action.
"This is my first time being [in Hawaii] with my staff, but I think we've done well with being structured and having our team being on the same page mentally," said Awerkamp. "This is a business trip and the team has managed it very well."
BYUH falls to 0-4-1 overall and 0-1 after their first PacWest match. Gurney finished with two of three shots on goal and keeper Daryl Kaufusi finished with no saves and the lone goal allowed.
ART U will have two days to recover before their next match, a 10 a.m. HT (1 p.m. PT) kickoff against Chaminade on Thursday, Oct. 1.
"It's great to start conference play 2-0, but we still have a long road ahead," said Awerkamp. "Chaminade is next and they'll be prepared for us. It's exciting, but we have a lot of work to do."
