Volleyball Seals Second Sweep of Seasiders

LAIE, Hawaii – Six sets up, six sets down.

Saturday night inside the Cannon Activities Center, ART U Volleyball once again executed the sweep of BYU-Hawaii as an encore to what happened on Sept. 28. Close throughout each set, the Urban Knights demonstrated both balance on offense (four players with six or more kills) and stingy defense (double-digit blocks as a team) en route to the 3-0 final score (25-21, 25-23, 25-23).

"This win was huge for us in terms of learning how to win on the road," said head coach Ray Batalon. "It's never easy coming to an opponent's home court and winning in straight sets. We feel that this was a big learning opportunity for our team, especially our young ones."

An evenly played first set saw BYUH rattle off three unanswered points to go up 13-10, but soon a 7-2 response highlighted by multiple blocks involving junior middle blocker Margaret Winkler put ART U ahead 18-16. The Seasiders drew the margin to one point at 20-19, but the Knights steadfastly held on to win 25-21, earning set point with a tandem block by Winkler and junior outside hitter Bailey Soolsma.

Freshman setter Lilika Teu found redshirt sophomore middle blocker Safua Elisaia twice during a 4-0 run to start the second set, but rallied right back and the teams were never separated by more than four points thereafter. Kills by senior outside hitter Melissa Brum were clutch for ART U down the stretch before redshirt freshman outside hitter Ema Causevic helped gain a 2-0 set advantage with her kill at 25-23.

Both teams jockeyed for position until an 8-3 push by the Knights earned them a 21-17 lead. Elisaia combined with Brum on the block before slamming home a kill and, though BYUH fought back with a 6-3 push to fend off one set point, a rejection by Soolsma and Winkler provided a fitting end to the set 25-23 and the sweep.

"I think in this match BYU-Hawaii came out with a lot more energy," said head coach Ray Batalon. "They were playing at home and they changed their lineup a little bit. In the second and third set, it was tight the whole way, but we served well down the stretch and sided out really well."

With the win, Academy of Art improves to 5-11 overall and 3-4 in PacWest action. Brum amassed a team-high 11 kills while Soolsma supported with seven kills, a .383 hitting percentage, and five block assists. Causevic and Elisaia each posted six kills, Winkler totaled a match-high six block assists, and Teu offered 28 assists. Senior libero Kabrina Speakman ended with a match-high 16 digs.

Sharing the same record as the Knights coming in, BYU-Hawaii falls to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in conference with the loss. Brittany Waite led the Seasiders with 11 kills and eight digs.

After Sunday off, ART U makes one last stop on this three-part Hawaii roadtrip on Monday, Oct. 10 at Hawaii Pacific. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. HT (10 p.m. PT) inside Saint Andrew's Priory.

"We'd like to continue focusing on the process and not concern ourselves too much with the outcome," said Batalon. "Each match, there is always something to learn from and tonight we learned that we can bounce back and play on the road."
