PacWest Conference Championship: No. 25 Academy of Art versus No. 14 Azusa Pacific Final ResultsÂ
PacWest Conference Championship Bracket
Â
SURPRISE, Ariz. The Urban Knights switched to the consolation bracket after
Thursday's 5-3 loss to the No. 9 Hawaii Pacific Sharks. With the defeat, No. 25 Academy of Art set out against No. 14 Azusa Pacific looking to make their dominance known in the PacWest. Their authority was felt with a convincing 5-1 triumph over the Cougars.
Â
The highlight of the day was the Knights' performance in doubles. ART U started all three matches with an early deficit, only to see them all come from behind to clinch a 3-0 sweep. Â
After being narrowly edged 8-6 by the nation's No. 1-ranked doubles pair in the HPU match, freshmen
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp would not be stopped in their 8-5 finish against APU. Junior
Annika Schneider and freshman
Taisiia Andrieieva pulled ahead of their opponents 6-5 and were able to win two more games to take their No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-5.

Â
The No. 3 doubles match between senior
Michelle Dandik Zaale, freshman
Paula Alcantara and the Cougars' Valeriia Kashina and Jackie Resler was one for the ages. The Urban Knights led late by a score of 6-5, but both sides traded the next two games to make it 7-6 in favor of the Knights. APU was able to rally to win the next two games, taking an 8-7 lead; however, with the match on the line, ART U pulled even at eight games apiece and took a 9-8 lead before finishing off their adversary 9-8 (8-6). The win gave the Urban Knights their second 3-0 doubles sweep in the tournament (also
April 13 against Dominican).
Â
With just two more wins needed to take home the victory, ART U was able to quickly seal the deal in singles. In the third position, Dandik Zaale was the first to finish, only dropping three games en route to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Kashina with whom she had just faced in doubles. Azusa Pacific took their only point of the day in the second position with a 6-6, 6-1 win against Alcantara. However, just minutes later, Alma sewed up the win with a 6-2, 6-1 sixth-singles victory.
Â
The Urban Knights' final match of the tournament will be a fight for fifth-place against the Concordia Eagles. Academy of Art faced CUI on March 2 when they
defeated the Eagles 7-2. Concordia
defeated Point Loma 5-2 earlier in the day to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket with ART U. The match is set to begin on Saturday, April 16 at 9:00 a.m.
