Women's Soccer Adds Trio to 2016-17 Squad

SAN FRANCISCO – As the beginning of the ART U women's soccer season draws closer, head coach Katie Awerkamp has announced the addition of another triad of players.

The first of whom is Abi Chavez, a junior transfer from Los Angeles Pierce College. Originally from southern California, Chavez graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, Calif. in 2014. In both her junior and senior seasons, she was given First Team All-Valley Mission League Honors and named Valley Mission League's best offensive player. Playing primarily in the midfield position, Chavez also holds the record for the most goals-scored at JFK and will be studying music production at ART U.

"We are excited for Abby to join us this Fall," said Awerkamp. "With her speed, technical, and distributing abilities, she will be able to come in right away and provide an attacking presence in the midfield."

Jenny Wittor joins the 2016 squad from Darmstadt, Germany. A local cup winner in 2012, Wittor also played for a U17 Bundesliga squad. At Academy of Art, Wittor will vie for a forward spot while studying graphic design in her freshman year.

"Jenny will be adding a lot of presence up top for us this fall coming in as a natural forward," said Awerkamp. "She is dynamic in the attacking third and has the ability to effectively use both feet."

The third recruit to join the Urban Knights is a freshman defender named Mikayla Lopez. Lopez lettered all four years at Placer High School and was named most improved player and given an honorary All-League nod her freshman season. The Auburn native was also selected to the All-League team the following two years. Lopez also captained for four years in club soccer while playing for both American River FC and 49er United Soccer Club. At ART U, she will be majoring in graphic design.

"Lopez will be adding a lot of depth in our backfield," said Awerkamp. "We are excited about her one-on-one defending abilities, strength in the air, and her strong ability to read in our defensive third."
