ART U Flashes Defense in Loss to Seasiders

SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's soccer (0-6, 0-1 PacWest) welcomed in BYU-Hawaii (2-2-1, 1-0 PacWest) on Tuesday for their first Pacific West Conference match and just second home game of the season. The Seasiders would walk away with a win however, scoring twice in the second half despite a strong defensive effort in the opening period.

Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Wirz played a crucial part in keeping the score knotted at zero in the first half. The graphic design major saved all six shots on goal and went on to record eight altogether in the contest (one shy of tying her second-most saves this season.) With 43 on the year, Wirz leads all PacWest keepers with the most saves. The Knights' back line was strong as well, helping fend off 10 shots in the first half and 22 in the game.

The second half resembled the first for much of the way, as both sides continued to share even possession of the ball. It was not until the 80th minute when the deadlock was broken and BYU-Hawaii scored its first and eventual game-winning goal, taking a 1-0 lead off of a corner kick. 90 seconds later, the Seasiders would score again coming off of yet another corner kick. In the remaining 10 minutes, ART U managed two shots, but was unable to capitalize, falling 2-0.

Academy of Art will continue their PacWest schedule when UH Hilo comes to San Francisco on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
