Doubleheader Sweep Lifts Knights to 5-0

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The undefeated season continues. Academy of Art improved on their best start in program history with a pair of wins over Holy Names, Saturday at College of Alameda.

The wins come with an array of incredible performances, including junior outfielder Thomas Delgadillo going a ridiculous 7-10, senior catcher Zak May knocking in five runs, senior pitcher Gonzo Rios striking out six while not allowing a run, and junior pitcher Galen Manhard striking out every batter he faced but one.

Game 1: ART U 16, HNU 4
The Urban Knights wasted no time and started the game with a leadoff double by junior outfielder Daniel Curiel. Curiel moved to third on a passed ball before senior second baseman Elijah Smith hit a ground ball to shortstop to drive him in and get ART U on the board early. The Hawks came right back in the bottom half of the inning and scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead into the second.

The PacWest's on base percentage leader, senior outfielder Taj Dawson, started the third inning with a walk and eventually worked his way aroun19311d to score. Delgadillo drove in the tying run on a double to center, before May singled up the middle to claim a 5-3 lead.

The Urban Knights scored a pair of runs in the fourth on a triple by Smith to score junior shortstop Justin Summers and junior third baseman Fabian Barcena. May struck again in the fifth with his second home run of the season that he crushed over the left-center fence.

From the fifth on it was all ART U, with the Knights putting up six more runs before the end of the game to take game one 16-4. Senior pitcher Ben Kaser picked up the win to improve to 2-0. It was Kaser's longest outing this season, throwing seven innings while giving up three runs and striking out six.

Game 2: ART U 6, HNU 5
For the second straight game, Curiel led off with a hit and came around to score in the top of the first. Curiel was driven in on a double to right center by Delgadillo for his third RBI on the day.

The Hawks came on strong in the third and put up a five spot to put ART U down 5-1 where Rios held them. Rios had an exceptional outing, throwing five innings out of the pen without allowing a run and striking out six. The senior right hander also picked up the win to improve to 2-0.
19310
ART U scored three in the sixth on singles by sophomore catcher Ryan Gamboa and May and a sac bunt by Barcena. The Knights tied the game at five next inning when Delgadillo drove in Smith on a double for his fourth hit of the game and third double of the day. The go ahead, and eventual game winning, run came in the top of the eighth with Dawson scoring on a throwing error for his third run of the day.

Manhard came in to close it out for the Urban Knights and worked out of a two-runner jam in the eighth on a pair of strikeouts. Manhard struck out the side in the ninth to nail down his second save and ART U's fifth win.

With the pair of wins, Academy of Art's undefeated record stays intact at 5-0. The Urban Knights will finish their series with Holy Names with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon at College of Alameda.
