OAKLAND, Calif. -- In their eighth meeting of the season, Holy Names went out to an early lead and although ART U made a late inning push, the Hawks held on for a series split Sunday afternoon at Laney College. The Urban Knights swept the Hawks in the series earlier this season to secure a 6-2 head to head record against the cross town rivals for 2019.
The final regular season meeting between the two schools was an eventful game that saw senior second baseman
Elijah Smith go a perfect 4-4, senior utility
Caden Spilsbury collect his first hit and run batted in on the same at bat, and junior outfielder
Thomas Delgadillo extend his hitting streak to nine. Freshman infielder
Nathan Macis and junior third baseman
Jayson Summers both notched their first career hits and runs as Urban Knights.
The Hawks put one run on the board in each of the first two innings. The Urban Knights tied the game in the bottom of the second after junior shortstop
Justin Summers scored senior catcher
Zak May on his first triple of the season. Spilsbury came up next to drive in Summers with a line drive over the second baseman's head. HNU came back with a pair of runs in the third on a single and a sac fly. The Knights got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a well executed safety squeeze by May. After that the game got away from Academy of Art as HNU put up seven runs in the next three innings. ART U threatened in the ninth with a pair of runs but the Hawks held on to take game four 13-6.
After their series with HNU, Academy of Art is 11-7 overall and 3-4 in conference. ART U will leave the mainland for a Hawaiian road trip starting with Hawaii Pacific on March 23.
